Yesturday was my first day, do you think it would be a mistake to tell my empolyer that Im pregnant right now? should I wait? Im about 8 1/2 weeks pregnant, Im scheduled for two 8 hour shifts and two 12's. Its my first job as an LVN/LPN, Im not sure what I should do???? Pls... help thanks!

If I were you I would wait a little bit, unless you plan to quit working once you have your baby. Employers understand that babies are a part of life (or there would be no more new life!), and it just so happened that you got pregnant right when you started the job. Unless you are sick a lot and have to keep calling in, I would wait until the first trimester is over - a lot of people do that anyway, even with family! If you're planning to stay at home when you have your baby, I would let them know now, because it could be frustrating to have you just newly oriented and then have you quit. This is just my opinion though, it's a choice you really have to make based on your own heart and your comfort level with sharing your pregnancy with the world (at least at this early stage!) Good luck with whatever you decide, and congratulations!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with telling them now....In my opinion it makes you look a little more mature because you are not waiting right until you show to say hey guess what "I'm pregnant." The same exact thing happened to me and I told my boss after only being there 3 days...then a couple weeks later I had to leave because I was one of the women that just never quit getting sick...so it made leaving alot easier because he already knew! One of my previous jobs hired 2 women that were 7 months pregnant. So no one will think bad of you we all have to have jobs to survive, and anyways everyone loves pregnant women! Good Luck to you!

Make sure your health benefits are in order before you tell anybody anything.

I would hope that nursing, with the dominance of women in its ranks, would view pregnency differently than corporate America does (my significant other is a family lawyer). Unfortunatley, when it comes to women's rights regarding pregnancy and employment we are not very understanding as a society. I encourage you to research your rights on this before talking to your HR department ( a book, The Boundaries of Her Body, has a couple great chapters on this issue).

Have you considered waiting until the probationary period is up? until that time elapses, it's a bit "easier" to let an employee go. plus it gives you a bit more time to know the employer. Although this should be a cut and dry..."just tell them", we know that not every facility is so clear cut. The personal choices are tougher.
of course you wouldn't want to work for a non supportive facility. You didn't specify if you're the one with the health care coverage now, it poses a different question.
I must respectfully disagree that everyone loves a pregnant woman. An employer with the $$ bottom line... will spend over $20,000 training you, FMLA is expected with any pregnancy and then you'll have disability which they kick in for.
You're going to find out what type of boss you have... sooner than you planned. but you may be pleasantly surprised as with this nursing shortage, and working moms they do need you. I'm sure it's a non issue but still pointing out several views for your consideration
Thanks, everyone for your input I think Im going to tell my supervisor today, as for insurance I would be qualified August 1st ( I just started I thought Id be qualified in 3 months but I dont know why?) but right now I have Medical for prenatal care only, I worked my first 12 yesturday it was pretty good, but I hadn't eaten or had a break after my lunch break, (7 hours without eating my poor baby) but i hope I dont jinks myself so far so good with my pregnancy, not much morning sickness, mostly fatigue and back ache, well wish me luck thanks again everyone!

congrats!!
I would wait until you are past your probation period, if possible. You should have insurance set up by then and it would be a little harder to get rid of you if they wanted to. Not all bosses want to deal with a pregnant employee! If you're worried about how your boss will react, don't drop any hints at work at all- it could be very hard not to let on but you really want your boss to hear it from you, not the rumor mill. Crackers and hard candy (especially ginger-based) can help a lot with morning sickness, as can keeping hydrated.
Also, sign up for short term disability if you have the option so you will have income while on leave. Someone else mentioned FMLA leave- if you're 2 months pregnant now and just starting with this employer, you won't qualiy for FMLA when you go on maternity leave. You have to be there for 12 months and have worked at least 1250 hours. Your employer has to have 50 employees within 75 miles, as well, but most hospitals have this. FMLA is also unpaid leave.
Congrats and good luck!

I graduated nursing school and passed the boards in August. Im applying for jobs now but I am 3 months pregnant. Should I tell potential employers before accepting the job?
