Just about to start my study - would love advice from all you experienced old hands!

G'day Kelly and WELCOME! Congratulations on your choice of nursing as a career, I hope you have many many happy years in the profession once you graduate.

You will get lots of support here on allnurses, while us Aussies among the members are not large in number, (either that or not many post!), I'm sure there will be plenty of helpful advice and encouragement.

As an external student living in remote NT, you will, no doubt, have some challenges at times. However, you can always contact your co-ordinator at the uni at which you are taking the course. You will also find valuable information here on the bulletin board, but you need to remember, this is predominately an American BB, so there are many things VERY different to how we do things in Oz.

Yes, I understand what you mean about things being a little different compared to Oz, but yes, there is still heaps of valuable info here too.

I've had a fair bit to do with remote clinics and hospitals up here since the birth of my 2nd child (I have 3) and have just been inspired by nurses and their caring ways. I cannot imagine myself wanting to do anything else! I know there will always be different sides to nursing, but that is what makes a nurse a nurse right? I am looking forward to caring for those in need in the future and making a difference to their lives in some small way :)

I have made a few lovely friends up here that are nurses and I love talking to them - they are full of love and care so much.

I have wanted to do this for some time now and it is finally happening! Just had to wait for the kids to get a little older as we have NO childminding facilities out here!

But, I am on my way and can't wait to experience all that nursing has to offer! Why don't more people want to do it... just can't figure it out! :rotfl:

Good luck with your studies. I also study externally as I find it a lot easier with three kids. It can be a challenge trying to motivated at times but it is so worth it. Hopefully your Uni will have some sort of discussion page where you will be able to go online and talk with your fellow students, I have found that really helpful. Which Uni are you with?

I know there is a forum thing on part of the website that you can get into with others who are doing the same units, so that will be good, but obviuosly I have to wait until it starts! :crying2: Just can't wait!

Thanks again to everyone and Tookie too for the latest reply.

I actually received all my textbooks (all but 2) on friday so i have been reading up on A & P. :smackingf

I am toroughly enjoying it so far and finding it quite interesting. i know I will get to the boring parts as well, but right now I feel great that i am filling my brain with knowledge at least. :yeah:

All I have to do now is wait another week to get my actual study materials! Ahh there's nothing quite like waiting another whole week for the mail plane to arrive :banghead:

I am loving it already! I feel like I am doing something worthwhile and it makes me really happy! :clown:

good luck, kelly!

i started working as an RN in mid-december after finishing uni, and work has reinforced that i definitely made the right choice studying nursing. yep, times will get tough when you're in the middle of assignments and exams or away on clinical rotations, but it is TOTALLY worth it in the end. how lucky are we? we get to do a really cool job, get paid reasonably well for it, and work a roster wherein we don't have to be stuck in an office 9-5, 5 days a week!

once you get stuck into the study you won't look back, even if you feel daunted by what you don't know, don't worry, it all comes together in the end (sounds so cliched i know but it's so true).
