I just told a travel agency yes to a travel assignment and a great hospital called me for a job position. It's great, but I am conflicted. I mean we are talking about great opportunity here! What would you do? I called the travel agency and they were saying that I gave them my word and it's a matter of integrity. I haven't signed a contract with them yet. I just told the agency "yes." I am suppose to start the assignment on the 18th of October. What should I do? I don't want to burn my bridges. Ironically, it was the agency that submitted my information to the hospital.
What do you mean by prestigious hospital??
It means a lot of things. It means John Hopkins, Columbia, NYU, UCLA etc. Level one trauma center. Higher education will be paid for i.e. BSN, Masters and beyond. Magnet status, unionized, great benefits, infinite opportunities to advance in your a career etc.,
Whoa whoa whoa... before you tell the agency to pound sand-- Did you say they submitted you to the facility that offered you the full time position? You might want to be careful on how you play this.. Once they find out the hospital is trying to hire you (and they will) the entire game changes.
I also verbally accepted a travel job, submitted all of my documentation, but never signed the actual contract. Now due to family issues, I called to tell the recruiter I have to decline the offer, which is to start Jan 4, 2012. The recruiter told me there might be some monetary penalty since they confirmed me to the hospital.
How true is this? Has anyone been in similar situations and had to pay a penalty?
Thanks.

The travel company would not hesitate to screw you over something they promised you verbally but wasn't put in writing in a contract -- "what's sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander." If you haven't signed a contract, you're not really obligated to them in any way.
