Just an LPN...

Nurses LPN/LVN

"Oh, you're just an LPN?" How rude is it when someone dismisses your occupation!?!? If you insert any other occupation here (ex. garbage man, stay at home mom) you would sound like a complete A-hole but somehow it is ok to say in the nursing field! What are some good comebacks to this remark?

I say that comment about myself, not to be derogatory, demeaning, or to get out of work. It is a known fact that LPN's get twice as much clinical hours, and at my school trained to do all of the tasks of an RN so that we can work more effectively with our coworkers no matter the letters that follow our name. I say it to keep myself grounded and not overstep my scope of practice. This also reminds me that my ultimate goal of CRNP is still to come. I chose the Lpn- RN route for the experience; and also make sure I can do it. Hell, in GA, there are not that many things I can't do (spike blood, push chemo drugs, sign death certificates, and oh yea, I can't make care plans :-). Yes I might be just an LPN, but I'm proud of my letters, license and pen.

Um, where I went to school, RN students got twice as many clinical hours than LPN students since our program was twice as long. Maybe I'm the odd one out though...

I always remind anyone questioning my credentials "If I make a mistake, my licence is in PERIL just like yours"... And if it's some one without an occupational pot-to-go-in I look at my source and laugh to myself. It usually quiets idle chatter.

I tend to get the "Oh, you're just an LPN" from non medical people. I'm always like, "What do you do for a living?". Then I'll ask them if they plan on getting another degree. Shuts them right up. I also get it from doctors and I'll say something smart like, "Why didn't you become a brain surgeon, I hear the pay is a lot better. Oh, but yeah.. I imagine it must be a hard program for some people". Shuts them right up.

I choose not to be an RN. I'm quick to tell people my career plans if they ask.

"I chose my career much more carefully than you chose that statement." You can add a small giggle to avoid confrontation but trust me it will make them think.
