Just got my first CNA Job!

Published

The hours are from 10pm-6am.

What exactly do CNA's do during these hours?

I have no clue what you'll be doing but congrats!!!

congrats from what I know when I asked my CNA when I did my rotaions she said we do rounds and check diapers and change them in they are soiled, but that is far as I know; maybe I can be wrong.

I guess it would depend on where you are going to be working? Long term care facility? Hospital?

I know at the hospital on most units you do your rounds, check/change attends/briefs (NOT diapers), reposition if needed, stock supplies, respond to code blues (depending on what unit your on).

Nursing Home :)

When I worked as a CNA on nights we made rounds every 2 hours to change briefs, check on residents, etc. We also answered any call lights (which weren't many during the wee hours of the night). We brought up supplies from the stock room, set out residents clothes for in the morning, washed dentures and the like, wiped down wheelchairs and walkers (this wasn't every night, I can't remember exactly how often), we filled up water pitchers for everyone (except NPO folks etc) and put fresh water and cups on their nightstands. I used to study a little in between rounds if we had down time. My nurses never minded since I was studying for pre-nursing classes. Then once morning rolled around we would start getting people up and dressed, hair brushed, teeth in, hearing aids in, etc etc. We would not have to get everyone up, some folks were day shifts' responsibility to get up. But we did get up quite a number of them. I can't remember if we did any showers or bed baths on nights. I think we may have done some in the morning hours after 5 am. I worked all 3 shifts during my time as an aid and it all kinda blurs together in my memory, LOL.

I thought night shift was the easiest shift, especially for a new CNA, but after a while I found it unrewarding because I wasn't really getting to bond with residents because most were asleep during the bulk of my shift. I really enjoyed the daylight shifts much much more although it sure was a ton more work.
