Just getting started, a little intimidated

Published

Wednesday was my first lecture, Thursday was my first lab, and Friday was my second lecture. I am a little intimidated because the instructor seems to talk about so many things so fast. First I was trying to take notes, then I realized she was going over material in the book, but just summerizing it thats when I started highlighting.

I guess the most intimidating part to me is just what do I remember? What she talked about, or whats in the book? I read the chapters and stuff but not a whole lot is sticking with me. I think its mostly because its history stuff, like who clara barton is and dorthea dix. I am terrible with history type of facts.

Is there anyone else that dislikes this part? I cant wait to get a little deeper into it :-) Oh and dosage calc isnt as bad as I dreamed it would be!! :lol2:

You know, I hate to advise you to "break the rules" but if you really are having trouble taking notes, digital recorders are so small, who would know? It's kind of a "greater good" thing, IMHO. If it helps you succeed and eventually become a nurse..........

Does your school use Blackboard? Our instructors put all of their lecture info on Bb for us to print out & use. Also, if you have a couple of friends in the class you trust, you guys can get together after class and make photocopies of each other's notes. Forming a study group helps. 4-6 is a good number, but I've found any more than that & it turns into a gossip/complain-fest party. Another trick I've picked up on is to not even TRY to read every word of every reading assignment. Pay attention to things in bold face, things in text boxes and any questions at the begining, middle or end of each chapter. Honestly, though, I don't remember ANY of the nursing theorists being on any of our exams, but I'm at a different school, too. We covered that stuff, but were never tested on it. It wasn't on the HESI, either. Last (but not least!) DON'T be afraid to go to your instructor and ask for advice on how to take better notes and be better prepared. The one complaint all of our instructors have had is that we don't utilize them enough. Most (but not all) are there to see you succeed, not fail, and will do whatever they can to help you, but you have to tell them you need help, first.

yes they give us the option of printing off a power point. I will give that a shot. I am so worried that I am going to get behind. I have difficulty listening accurately and taking notes at the same time. Im not giving up though! I have worked to hard to get to where I am :-)

I printed out ALL Power Points and use highlighters, several different colors. I highlight things that are said multiple colors one color....then reglar stuff they stress alot a different color, etc. If they say "this is important"..I have a red sharpie and I put a star by it and highlight it!

As you go you will get used to and pick up certain clues as to what your instructors think are impoartant!

Good luck!!

For the hx things you could just make notecards..but for such things as the nursing process etc, notecards are not very helpful....at least they weren't for me!

OK, I printed off the power point today and we had a diff instructor. It was useless. Yesterday (sun) I read the assigned reading and highlighted what I thought was important in pink, and during lecture today I highlighted what the instructor went over in orange. My book is multi colored but to me its very easy to understand. I like my method. No note taking for me, at least not now. I am working my orifice off defining all the words and doing all the questions.... Im gonna have carpal tunnel.. lol I am in much better spirits today. :-)
