Do you consider that low and rush to give a snack or do you consider it high or considering not alarming?

102 is normal. Normal is generally 70 - 109 mg/dl. Some facilities may use 80 - 120 as the normal range not requiring insulin or treatment with snacks. Now if you gave gave the pt fast acting insulin 5 minutes beforehand then you do want to give them a snack or they will be hyperglycemic rather quickly.
Thank you!!!

our policy is to treat if 70 or below or when nursing judgement determines otherwise. I WISH my BS was 102 most of the time

I had one brittle diabetic pt at my LTC. The BS ranges were unbelievable. Her "normal" blood sugar was around 250 most of the time. When she went to the low 100's..we knew she was on the way to bottoming out her blood sugar. And she did that quick! In the blink of an eye, check the BS and get 100's, 10 minutes later she was in the 60's!! I always gave her some juice and a light snack then. If her's was 102, yup a glass of juice and a snack were in order. And a recheck of her sugar.
For my other diabetics I give them a smile when their sugar is 102. If they tend to run really high normally and I get a 102..a smile from me and then a recheck 1/2 later to make sure its not coming down.

We usually hit the alarm when the BS hits 100. Snacks, quick! 'she is going to crash!':)
