Just bummed out.........

Nursing Students General Students

Hi everyone. Today i finished my first round of clinicals. After clinicals, I had to take an ATI assessment test in Fundamentals of Nursing. Now to pass this test, one has to be within the 50 percentile. I made it in the 40 percentile and feel like crap. I wanted to drop when my professor said i didn't make it. The sad thing is that I am probably the onle one who didn't pass. I know I am an awful test taker but I didn't expect to fail. I think to myself: if i fail now, what more for the future to come. I am just very upset with myself and I am now thinking about changing majors. I love nursing but it's so hard for me to grasp concepts of nursing sometimes. I don't want to change majors but I don't want to continue failing. Any advice out there? When should i throw in the towel?

Hi Kliz,

I'm really sorry to hear that you didn't do well on your exam. Does this mean you'll have to take this class over? If it doesn't and you really like nursing then I'd say keep going. I don't know if you've already read many of threads that say to practice, practice, practice the test taking skills? Get yourself a NCLEX exam study guide and practice the questions in the book. If you need more info, just let us know!

Hi. I don't have to take the class over but I do get another chance to redo the ATI Fundamentals Assessment test. I just feel like a dummy. Thanks.

Not sure what an ATI test is - if you're talking assessment of problems, you can't go wrong looking at the ABC's (Airway, Breathing, Circulation) - everything else is second to that. If you're talking basic physical assessment - that's rote memorization and *very* difficult for some folks (myself included.)

Could you give us a little more idea of the nature of the test?

Hi. The ATI tests are those test you take at wwwatitestingcom. At the end of our clinical, we have to take this test and score within the percentile. I was below. It's just a test basically on the fundamentals of nursing. The school gives us a 300pg fundamentals book to study. I swear on my soul, I studied this book but still I failed. I feel like giving up completely. What is going to take for me to absorb all this info, half of it which was not taught by our professors, and pass the test. This studying and work isn't fun anymore. Will it ever get better?

It is really hard to get all the information that they throw at you in nursing school and expect it to stick the first time around. Do some more studing and give yourself credit for doing well enough to get as high as you did. Get a good nights rest before test , Don't spend the last night craming do all studing before relax the night before the test and keep telling your self that you can pass the test. Good luck and let us know how things go

We all feel like a dummy at some point, but after your retake you'll forget all about it! Trust me on this, I speak from experience. :imbar I was one of the few (and I do mean few) people who didn't get the required % on my assessment final practicum all because I accidentally skipped a whole page. I felt horrible but then I had my retake and now it doesn't matter at all and I don't feel bad anymore.

Sucks though that I made an 89.72 for the class and there is no rounding. I'm still working through that one. :(
