So I start an assignment jan11-apr 9th, my first assignment. Then I look in the mailbox this week and I have been summoned to jury duty in February. What do I do, is there a way to get out of it without having to go all the way back to TN? How can I prevent this in the future?

Your jury duty notification should have included a little information about how to address any such problems. At least it should have included how to contact the court. Each jurisdiction and court has different rules and procedures. However, most let you reschedule your service to a time more convenient to you. In my jurisdiction ... the last time I was called for jury duty, I could go to their website and switch weeks to any one of a number of options.
Ok I will check on that...at work today but will check when I get home.

Talk to your company. Mine has a standard letter they can send out explaining the situation and requesting deferral of jury duty.
I sent an email to my travel company but they haven't responded yet...I assume they are out for the holidays.

I haven't ever needed a letter from work. I have always called the court directly and they just "reschedule" it and I get put back in the pool to be drawn another time.
My recruiter told me they have a form letter that they just send to the court house explaining my situation, and she said 9/10 times its no bid deal at all.
