JSRCC Nursing.

I am a young mother who is graduating high school this June. I am interested in becoming a Registered Nurse. I am planning on attending J.Serg Community College this fall.

I am interested in completing their RN program. I'm just wondering if anyone is enrolled and what they think of the program...?

i don't know about that nursing school, but for nursing school in general, the first semester you should be studying fundamentals of nursing. i found reviews and rationales nursing books or nursing made incredibly easy to be helpful throughout nursing school.

[color=#996633]prentice hall reviews & rationales: nursing fundamentals (2nd edition) amazon has this book used starting at $3.75 plus shipping. i order most all of my books used online, but i check to see how much shipping will be and if the book comes with its cd. i usually go to my local bookstore or college campus library and look at the different books available before ordering a book.

your college may have already told you this but you will probably have to buy a scrub top and pants for clinicals in the colors worn by your school and probably a school patch to sew on your scrub top. i bought 3 patches when i was in school and sewed them on two scrub tops and one labcoat. (our school requested a lab coat, however we did not really use it until our third semester). the best thing i ever did was have two sets of scrubs ready, we had two days of clinicals so i had clean scrubs each day and then i did not have to wash until the weekend.

i also purchased two stethoscopes and two penlights and "always" kept one set in the car for those days when i was in a hurry and left things at home. our first couple years at my school we had to purchase a printed namebadge (i got mine made at an office supply store) as specified by our school. i bought three of these as well so i had one on both my scrub tops and my lab coat. my way of having several of everything might not be necessary for some students but it worked great for me. we needed white nursing shoes as well.

at our school for first semester nursing we purchased our textbooks in bulk as one large box of books that the school required just for first semster. i did buy thyat first set of books new from the school campus bookstore before i became familiar with purchasing used books online. some schools i have heard have a saunders nclex study book included in this bunch of books. if your school does not include this it is a very valuable book to use during nursing school as well as after school when you are preparing to take your nclex. the book is updated from time to time and a new version is published. when time came to study for my nclex i compared my older copy to the new one out and though there were some changes i just went to a local bookstore and looked at their book to study the few new things.

other helpful aids you can find used online or in your local bookstore are spark charts and small pocket sized books with need to know useful information in nursing. these were not required just things that some students liked to have.

at some point i can't remember when but we were required to have bls (basic life support) for the health professional level of cpr, we had to show our card to the instructor at school as well as show proof of our childhood immunizations and hep b series.

hope this helps,

best of luck

Thank you so much for your thorough and oh-so-helpful reply!! I really appreciate the time and thought you put into it  I will definitely take it to heart !!

There might be more specific information for your school on allnurses. Or at least other past students who have attended there. Try searching "JSRCC" in the search bar on allnurses.

You will be taking Nur 111 and Nur 226, medical assessment. At orientation they will arrange for you to be sized and order your scrubs. Within the first 2 weeks of class you will need to purchase any stethoscope of your choice. You will also need a pair of all white leather shoes, can be sneakers or whatever you are comfortable in. I am in JSRCC's summer program right now. I would recommend you buy a 4" binder and 2 2 or 3 inch binders as well as a pack of manila folders. Nur 111 is broken up into 15 weeks and it works well if you have a manila folder with your material in it for each week. Everyone keeps all of these in their 4" binder. Get a rolling backpack because the books weigh a ton! I bought my books off Amazon for much less than in the school bookstore. You will have a pass/fail math test in the first 2 weeks on medical dosage calculations. If math isn't something that comes easy to you, buy medical dosage calculations for dummies/ or made easy and start on it now. They don't teach you how to do the calculations, they just expect you to be able to do them.

Good luck! So far summer at JSRCC is going well for me

Hi thanks for the information tishial. I am glad to hear all is going well in summer :yeah:. did the summer go through a lot of alternates do you know. As mentioned in an earlier post, I am an alternate and I was curious as to how that really worked.... I will be attending the orientation in July as an alternate and doing everything to prepare the physicals, titers and all uniform ordering (Of course after reading your post I will be buying a med dosage workbook or something to practice just in case) I already called and not much definitive info given . oh well I will sit patiently until orientation and hope for the best and hope for more information in July.

Thanks for the update and info. I am glad that the summer is going well for you :) I am looking forward to the Fall!!

I was originally an alternate and I got in for summer and so were a few others. Please keep in touch and let me know how it goes and if you do get to start for fall.

thank you tishial. I will keep you posted as I am hoping for more info next week!!!

I just graduated from JSRCC this past May. I made decent grades and worked my tail off. The department of nursing was extremely confusing to deal with, the Director was sometimes helpful however she seemed to have a poor attitude which tends to trickle to the dept. Her secretary is generally quite rude. Very rarely was I ever treated with respect. The secretary most often talked to the students as if they were STUPID. This kind of stuff is uncalled for if you ask me. The staff was all over the place, each teaching how/what they wanted.

Overall the program has a lot (an understatement) of issues which made my life extremely stressful, unnecessarily. All in all wish I had never gone there, and couldn't wait to get out of there. I've been to a few other universities and never have I dealt with staff that was as UNPROFESSIONAL in my entire life.

From friends I have, I hear John Tyler has a great supportive staff. Not too familiar with Bon Secours.

YIKES! Anyone with anything positive to say about the program? I start this Fall, so I am hoping that there are some good parts to the program.

Thanks

Im with you VA RN2B......I am interested in attending JSRCC for nursing...i just attended the infor session and will be taking pre reqs....I hope that the program will get better.

Me too. I hope for all you future students they can work through their issues. If they had a more professional attitude and work out their kinks they'll be ok. Till then, just know their are better options. Nursing school is tough, but the added stress is unnecessary.

Good luck too all you trying or about to get in. Just keep your chin up and don't let their negative attitudes get you down!!!
