My prof just gave us all teaching assignments, and mine is about home care after abdominal surgery for a patient with a JP drain. My med/surg text doesn't have much on the drains... anyone have an idea of where I can find information that I would need to teach a patient with a drain?
Thanks!

You can also call the local general surgeons and general surgery floor at the hospital -- both have patient teaching materials for home discharge. Although, in the interest of full disclosure, the one sent home with my mother after her mastectomy was crummy, and didn't tell her what amount of drainage to expect or what to happen if she began feeling fullness at the flap site. I checked it and the tubing was kinked- straightened, it drained more than 150cc all at once. I ended up splinting a loop of the tubing with tape where it exited the "grenade" so it couldn't fold over again.
