to join or not to join??

I am graduating in 3 weeks with my BSN and am seriously considering joining the army as an officer. My husband is active duty army for 10+ years. We have a 3 year old daughter and while I have a family care plan in place, I am very concerned about how much nurses really deploy. I know it's different for them, but I have a bad taste in my mouth with deployments, as my husband is on his 3rd year long deployment in 5 years. I am 23 years old and a prime candidate for this, but have some reservations about it. Can anyone give me HONEST, educated answers?? I prefer to talk to someone who has no agenda, like an AMEDD recruiter would.

There have been a few threads about deployment recently, such as this one:

I'm sure others will chime in. I'm still in the "working on joining" stage, so my input is limited. :) But welcome to Allnurses!

Nurse generally deploy for 6 months at a time unles they are in a TOE unit. Depending on what your AOC is will also affect how often you will deploy. Recently I was in a class with 6 other Army nurses; all were 66H, med/surg; who all had less then 3 years of service. Out of those 6 only 2 had deployed and both for 6 months. If you have a skill indentifier ie M5, 8A (er & ICU) or a 66E your chances are greater that you will deploy. I have know some nurses who have deployed multiple times also. Sometimes there appears to be no rhyme or reason on when & who get deployed. Since you will be a new grad you will be a 66H which decreases your chance of being deployed but does not eliminate it.
