I have always wanted to be an OB nurse. I am currently a student and will graduate in May with my ADN. What can I do to find an OB job and is there any preparation I can do now? I plan on also in time getting my Lactation Consultant cert. too because I'm very interested in helping moms with their breastfeeding.
Any thoughts?

I joined AWHONN as a student--cheaper that way! I also took NRP and ACLS as a student--also cheaper if your school has agreements with hospitals. I took a basic Fetal Monitoring class and a breastfeeding class through a hospital my school had a contract with. I think all of this helped me get job offers--I had several as a new grad. Good Luck!

Yep joining AWHONN good move. Also networking is critical. OB jobs are notoriously hard to get as new grads (But NOT impossible---I did it).
Start getting to know nurses who can help you get into OB when you do graduate. Let EVERYONE know you want to be in OB when you are done with school---your instructors, your classmates, the nurses in the hospital at which you do clinicals, EVERYone.
Good luck. I got my OB job right out of school-----if I can do it, anyone else can, too.
Well thanks! I am going to a job fair in NJ next month and hope to make some connections there. I have hopes of joining a certain hospital with a wonderful OB dept. I have been in touch with their nurse recruitor..so hopefully a little closer to my grad date I can find a postion. It truly is my dream =)
Good luck; let us know how things pan out.
