Hi!
I am wondering if anybody can provide me some answers about the job situation in Canada. Looking at the postings it us quite bleak ( dont know if this is only in one area).I am a cardiothoracic scrub nurse here in London and my husband is thinking of immigrating to Canada.
What is the job situation over there in general ( not really county specific)? Are they hiring theatre nurses?
Many thanks for the help...

Yeah the job outlook is pretty dismal in most places. When are you planning on moving and have you looked at licensing requirements?

OK, we need to know a bit more.
Canadian nurses are trained as general duty nurses. UK nurses aren't. So getting a practice permit may be difficult because your education may be deemed short in some areas.
Canada is a huge country. Where are you moving to?
I know in the major hospitals here in Alberta, OR nurses can be in demand at certain times. But they are usually hired as casuals with no guaranteed hours. That's after you have a practice permit. Our ORs float you into whatever theatre needs staff. The only staff that are only truly dedicated to specific theatres are the Opthamology and Orthopedics nurses. The rest usually work in a theatre for the day and can go from a C-section to an appi to a trauma.
So figure out where you will be living and then apply to the appropriate provincial college and have your education evaluated.

Its extremely costly to train a new OR nurse, so I think that with your expereince (once you get your license to practice, that is) you should be able to find work. But it seems to be either feast or famine with the OR postings.
