Hello all, I am in the process of leaving the state I currently live in and have been working as a nurse, to relocate back to Sacramento to be with my parents. They are both in their seventies with health problems and my father is edging toward end stage leukemia. I am in a tough spot knowing that I have not had any problems getting positions where I live now with jobs being plentiful. And also know that nursing positions are just about nil in NorCal. This I don't understand. I am registered with a site that sends me a heck of a lot of job postings daily. I am familiar with these facilities and actually grew up in Cali but spent the last 18 yrs out of state. If there are no jobs to be had in Sacramento county, why are they posting so many jobs if there are none and no one is getting hired, even non new grads?

Nonexistent jobs are posted for various reasons I read one time. One reason, is that the job is to be filled by somebody already available in house, but the job must be posted as a formality, because according to the rules of whatever "game", (union, or perhaps federal job, etc.), the job must be made "available" to all qualified applicants as a matter of "fairness". Another reason nonexistent jobs are posted, is a ploy to get a collection of resumes and applications to mull over the next time there is a "real" opening.
I knew the truth would hurt.

I'm not in CA, but I've seen this phenomenon many times, also. The large, main hospital within the "healthcare system" that is my current employer always has many, many RN positions posted -- if those were all actual vacancies that they needed to fill, the hospital would be unable to operate! Yet, it's chugging along just fine (albeit, intentionally somewhat short-staffed, natch :)), the number of posted "positions" never seems to go down, and new graduates in my area have a v. tough time finding jobs.

Maybe the postings are for nurses who are about to be fired and don't know it yet.
