Jobs for Nursing Students

Published

Since I won't have much experience or a title I was wondering if anyone knew of any positions that nursing students are eligible for? I'll be studying full time but I must work part time in order to help pay for my rent and bills. What jobs did you take on during nursing school?

Thanks!

i work 24 hours a week as a cna in a residential care facility for seniors. they are flexible with me being in school, so that is always a plus

Just a minor correction - patient care techs cannot "do IVs" or any other task that requires a license. Their work is strictly limited to activities that could be done by a nurse assistant.

Your post is not entirely accurate. Many hospitals do hire people as patient care technicians, and they do have the responsibilities I listed. The only prerequisite is (and it varies from place to place) from EMT / paramedic to medical and nursing assistant. It depends on many factors, including the state and indeed the facility in which you work. Ask anyway.

I'm still in pre-nursing but I work in the medical records dept of a large doctors' group (maybe 30-40 doctors all together) and I do the electronic medical records scanning. I scan all of the papers so the doctors don't have to use charts anymore. I'm allowed to listen to my iPod all day (which I spend part of my days listening to my school lectures) and I get to look at charts all day and learn from them. It's not a lifelong job but it's pretty easy and stress-free since I don't have to deal with anyone at all. It's great for being in school I think!

I just finished an Accelerated BSN program. I started out working 8-16 hours per week, but that didn't last too long! It finally came to a point where I couldn't schedule regular hours due to last minute changes in class and clinical times, etc. My stress level was high during the entire program, but it was better once I stopped working and focused more on school. My advice is to try to get by without working if you are in an accelerated program. I think you'll find you need all your extra time for school-related activities.

Is there a Veterans Hospital near you? They love to hire Student Nurse Techs ( I currently work as one and am also in nursing school). The minimum that you have to work is 8 hours per pay period (4 hours a week). The pay is decent (a little more than a CNA) and you get to practice skills that you have learned in school under the supervision of a RN. I love this job!!

When I was living on campus at my previous college I worked as a Personal Assistant. Its sort of like home health care. I worked through a couple of different agencies that paid me for working for a disabled patient. It was really cool because she was a college student as well, so the only thing I had to do was help her dress, shower, eat and go to classes with her. I would even spend a night in her dorm because she needed help through the night. And the best part about it was I got paid for sleeping!! She had a muscle disorder so she couldn't walk, the only thing she did was surf the net on her laptop and all while she was doing that I was studying and doing homework. My biweekly checks were 500 to 1000 dollars, because I worked over night mostly and all day on weekends. I had classes through the weekdays. I think that home health care would be good because your working for an individual with needs and they could be very flexible with hours. Its also a benetfit because your getting experience with one on one patient care. Good company's to look into is Bright Star Health Care, and All Medical Personell. They could provide you with temp, part time or full time work. I'm starting nursing school in march 09 so I'm in the same boat, I'm now looking for jobs again in this field so that I will be set. So good luck and keep us posted.

A big thanks to everyone who has responded! I'm taking each suggestion into consideration :) I received my EMT certification but it expired before I was able to complete the 3 credits necessary to renew it. Unfortunately, with 18 credits this semester I don't believe I'll be able to take the EMT class over again. The one I took was incredibly intense which included a lab and a small internship at the hospital. We weren't able to complete the course if we failed ONE exam in that program. So unfortunately, EMT is out for me but such a good suggestion. Thank you!

I'm actually going to be getting a room mate to help with the costs, but Ill keep the rest in mind as well because a small part time job will be necessary in order to be able to eat a little something from time to time :)

Again, Thank you for your suggestions!

CNA.. did you have your certification or did they allow you to work without it due to your experience in nursing school?

Thanks!

I was wondering the same thing so I have checked around. I am in Texas, and all the hospitals close to me require a tech to have completed 2 complete semesters of clinical. I am just starting second semester so thats out of the question until May.
