Jobs while in nursing school

I am starting second semester in an RN program next week. I would love to get a part time job in a hospital doing something related to nursing or tech care. Does anyone know of a website that might list these types of job opportunities. I know most nurse internships are not available until after I complete 3rd semester. Any info would be appreciated.

Hi. :wink2: Most nursing students are able to work as a Nurse Tech on the floors in the hospital after their first or second semester depending on the facility, nost of them after the first semester. You may want to check you local hospitals websites and if none are listed, call the HR department directly and inquire do they hire nurse techs and if so, what are the qualifications and hiring process etc. Most of the time, you have to interview for the position as you would as a regular employee. The good thing about getting hired as a nurse tech is that most departments will allow flexible scheduling because of your school schedule.

HTH :)

I checked the websites of the hospitals in my area, and it shows I need to have completed the second semester of clinicals to get a tech or nursing care assistant position. I am just starting second semester. Is there another position I could get at this point?

Maybe a unit clerk. That would get you exposed to trascribing orders. Some employers want you to have experience but some will take the semester in Nursing School for the experience. HTH :)

Try all the hospitals in your area. Get a job if at all possible. I will REALLY help you when you graduate. I did that 30 years ago and I was ready to hit the floor running after graduation.

If anyone could give some advice... :)

Here's a little background:

21, female.

I have a BA in Early Development Psychology. I decided to go back to school and try to become an RN. I would like to eventually work with children in pediatrics. I'm starting my pre-reqs at Brookhaven College and would like to finish there. Luckily, I have four classes from my bachelor's that were transferred in towards my pre-requisites courses/support classes. I received all A's in them. I plan to take ALL the support classes in order to better my chances at getting accepted. This leaves me with 7 support classes left! I have a few questions..

1. For those who have gotten accepted and are currently in the nursing program: What were your acceptance stats (GPA, test scores, points) ?

2. How long does the program usually take? I would like to try and be done within 2 -3 years.

3. Did you work full time as well as going to school? everyone keeps telling me to not work full time.

4. Also, I'm taking A&P and Chem in the fall? Is that a crazy schedule??

Thanks!

I am headed into my second semester as well and interviewed for and was granted a nurse extern position with PRN scheduling to accomodate school. This hospital hired two of us out of many many applicants. It is very competitive and you have to be pretty aggressive to get your foot in the door. There are other nursing students who took volunteer positions who are hitting brick walls in trying to get a paid position. Just keep at it, work your connections and get good grades. One of the things they looked at was my GPA. Oh...these positions also were NOT listed on the hospital website. I found out about it by calling HR at the end of last semester and inquiring if there were any student nurse positions available.

I worked as a caregiver during nursing school. I went to clients' homes and helped them with ADLs and provided companionship. It may not be as relevant to nursing as a tech job, but I got to study a lot on the job! I would get paid to sleep. It was fulfilling work. I worked with a company called Griswold, but there are several.
