job vs school

I am a LPN and i been at my job, which i enjoy very much for over a year. When they hired me they stated that they encourage nurses to go back to school and will work with people schedules if they decide to do so. Well I talked to my DON last month and I told her that I would be starting school in August full time and I may go to summer school in May. So I asked her if I could work every Friday, Saturday and Sunday as a float nurse. She told me no because they will not be able to pay me float pay (which would be an increase in about $8). I told the DON that they didnt have to pay me float pay but i need to work that schedule so i could finish school. She again told me NO. So i asked her what was the problem because they are alowing other nurses to go to school. She told me that "to many people are going to school" I am upset that my job wont work with my schedule. I would just go get a different job but due to our economy i dont think that would be a good idea. I only have 13 months left in a BSN nursing program and I dont understand why I have to choose between my job or nursing school. At this point im just undecided on what to do.

Something similar happened to me. Part of the reason I was hired was because I was in school. I was allowed to adjust my days off to accommodate school only one time and was told by the relatively new supervisor not to ask again. The person who was there before me and who did a poor job of staying awake on night shift, amongst other things, got to change her schedule at will, for no good reason. Looking back on it, I realized that I should have figured something out about this turn of events.

You need to decide which is more important and act accordingly. Another job will appear after you have finished school and have better qualifications. If you stay at this job with your hands tied behind your back, there is no guarantee that there will not be a reason to treat you in an adverse way or even get rid of you within the next two years. I would look for another job if I were you. You will probably be treated poorly even after you finish school if you were to stay at this place. Something to consider.

i have really thought about leaving the job and just getting another one working the weekends but my daycare bill alone is $600 a month, so i thought about waiting to September 2010 when my son starts school so that i dont have to worry about my daycare bill, but the other part of me wants to just go ahead aand start school this year, i think im going to talk to my DON one more time and if She still says NO, then i have a big decision to make
