Job shadow offer after interview good sign? And advice please.

Published

i had an interview with human resources a while ago and a peer panel interview yesterday for a geripsych unit position. i was called 45 min later to schedule job shadowing for a couple of hours. does anyone have any advice regarding job shadowing, and is this a pretty good sign that i have a great chance of getting the job?

As in every field, see the shadowing as your second step in the interview course. This means human resources and the D.O.N. like your presentation. The shadowing is a chance for the charge nurses and staff nurses to determine your skill set and likability.

Typically, if you know your stuff you have a good chance of being offered a job. But, as in all cases there are worst case scenarios. Maybe the senior staff nurses won't gel well with your personality. Go in confident, showcase your knowledge, but don't be a know it all. You should be fine.

Thank you so very much for your words of wisdom! I greatly appreciate it.

Shadowing is a good thing. Treat it as an extended interview. It gives you the chance to see the unit for which you're applying, teamwork on the unit (or lack thereof). It also lets your potential coworkers "feel you out" and see how you might fit in. I gives you a chance to get feedback from potential coworkers on the unit and its managers.

Show up early, offer to help as much as you are permitted, ask questions, and follow up with a nice letter to the unit manager thanking him/her for allowing you to shadow on the unit. Be positive, remarking on what you saw/experienced during your shadowing opportunity.

Good luck!

The same advice I gave in the other post applies here. You may not really be able to participate in patient care for liability reasons, and that may be frustrating especially if you want to "prove your worth." However you will probably get the chance to do a little therapeutic communication...and the staff WILL be watching how you handle yourself around psychiatric patients and the way you interact with them. So if there's anything you're going to brush up on for the interview, make that it.

Good luck!

I got the official job offer today!

Are they "routine" cookies, or something special like Doug's Evil Cookies?

recipe:

Doug's Evil Cookies

Whenever I've brought these into work, I've been good (relatively speaking!) and have added enough red food coloring to distinguish the spicy cookies from their neutered brethren.
