Job Prospects

I am considering a move to the Dallas area (northern side). I have had 1.5 years of experience on a medical surgical unit as a LPN. I work PRN in a TCU, I work PRN at a nursing home and am currently working as a LPN in a walk-in clinic attached to a large hospital (since April). I graduate with my BSN in December and am currently doing my practicum in ICU. Do hospital employers consider LPN hospital experience into their requirements or am I better off getting my one year of experience where I am and then looking a move south?

It is a very tough market right now for new grads. If you have a pretty good chance of getting a new grad position where you are I would do that and then come here as an experienced nurse. Even with LPN experience acute care will consider you a new grad. Might be considered in long term care though.

I want hospital work when I finish up and am almost certain to have an ICU position when done here so I will probably stick it out. I live in a very cold and snowy area so the appeal of the warm is great! :)

I do have another question that is related - are some of the outlying hospitals more likely to hire a new grad vs. in the Dallas metro area?

Not at this time (couple years ago it was easy). The problem is we have so many Universities and Community College nursing programs in DFW that they are just pumping out new grads at an unbelievable rate.

If it makes you feel any better we had terrible snow and ice last winter.....

I grew up in Omaha. We don't get a lot of snow here in DFW but we do get ice and the cold here often feels colder than what I grew up with due to the dampness of it. If you want warm winters you will need to go further south than Dallas. :)

Rural areas are hiring more easily than metroplex areas. BSN is getting hired more than ASN. In state is getting hired before out of state.

Good luck!
