Job options you never knew about, but wish you did as new RN?

Published

Just passed NCLEX and was thinking about different job options other than the typical med surg Rn in a hospital setting.

Veterans association hospital- hear they have great benefits, get paid less hourly. Work 20 years then get 20 years retirement.

Prison RN- Hear they get paid more per hour due to setting.

Research RN- can't find a lot of info on this but a friend mentioned it and just that she loves her job and makes bank compared to a RN in med surg

travel/ home care- ?

Army- sadly need a BA for this

If anyone has useful links to any of these areas in nursing or personal experience please share

pros vs cons

pay

working conditions

benefits

pt/client ratio

hours

etc.

yes, they masturbate to you, in front of you. in the prison system it is called "gunning". they get into serious trouble if caught. they will do it to males or females...some don't discriminate. we have one male nurse here that is a bad a$$ nurse. he fits right in and doesn't take crap from them and they know it so they don't push it.

There's also nurses that work for flu shot clinics. And blood bank nurses.

I did the flu shot clinics for my first RN job and loved it! They are seasonal though... and sometimes hard to get hours.

one can get into informatics with just a few years of nursing. Informatics is a broad field from IT working in setting up the electronic health record to review and coding the charts, to financial billing review. Another departement I just found out about was "billing" like when you pull those yellow stickers and they go to SPD for application to the bill for all the supplies. RN's review these suppliy bills and make sure they are or seem to be legitamite ( no insurance fraud). I had a friend apply for a positiion like this..unfortunately she didnt get it. ICD- 10 is coming ( the new billing system for the US) I have a few friends who are considering going to school to learn coding in ICD-10. Word is there will be " head hunters" looking for nurses that can do ICD- 10 coding. The best of both worlds. You could check out the organization ACDIS. Association for Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists

I have heard research pays well but you have to know someone to get into it from what I hear. I applied to many jobs with years of experience and cant break into it. Any one elese?
