Specialties Disabilities

Hi all,

I will be graduating nursing school next December, and I am wondering what the job options are if I want to work with those with developmental disabilities? I just finished my community health semester and I was placed at an adult day care where two RN employees worked with CNAs, but the RNs were so busy doing the required paperwork most of the time that they did not get a whole lot of interaction with the participants. Anyone know the options and how to go about looking for those job openings?

Thanks!!:nurse:

Look into "state schools" in your state. In Texas these are now called "State Supported Living Centers", and many nurses are employed there. There is a lot of paperwork to do in such positions, but also lots of interaction with the people who reside there.

Hope this helps. :nurse:

Try looking for working with children in the home setting. Most of them have DD and require skilled nursing care. Try Bayada or interim. Alot of these positions are working with school age students. You attend school with them. It is alot of work but never the same.

There are also private agencies who hire RN's in the group home setting who have DD's

In Oregon there are a series of agencies that run group homes. Our "state school" was actually a horrible facility where unspeakable acts of abuse happened before it was finally shut down just over a decade ago. Since then, Oregon has been almost entirely a community-based DD and mental health care. Applying to these agencies is one way to get a job in the field here in Oregon.
