Job offers

Nurses General Nursing

I was offered an RN job at an academic hospital on a medical floor. Commute is 1 hour away, with 3 12-hr night shifts per week.

I was also offered an OR job at a local hospital 3 minutes away. It will be 4 day shifts per week.

My dream was to always work in trauma at the academic hospital. However, I also want to prioritize family and life/travel.

What job would you choose?

Alex, you seem to be all over the place.  According to your last post you already accepted the job with the one hour commute and are to start in January. Is this another offer?

It is the same job. Just to make it simple, I said job offer.

Hands down, no contest, the OR job, both for the travel time and having worked both areas.

Specializes in Corrections, Surgical.

If you don't want the OR job I'll take it LOL. That's my dream specialty but where I'm at its just not hiring for new grads and people without OR experience. Right now I commute an hour from my hospital for night shift and I'm telling you its murder. So many times I feel the car drifting and I'm falling asleep at the wheel and I have to stop at a publix or walgreens parking lot to take a quick nap. My biggest fear is one day getting into an accident because I was sleeping at the wheel from being exhausted. I'm going from full time to part time because the commute and because of other reasons. An hour doesn't sound that long but when you have been up all night trust me its pure hell.

I wonder if impure hell is better than pure hell?

I stayed on a MN schedule for 17 years even when not scheduled to work, so my 45-50 minute drive home was merely tedious.

It is good that you have the wherewithal to take a quick nap when driving and drifting off, bluescrubs.
