Job Offer - but in Psych

Published

So, I received a job offer today from a hospital where I have been doing my clinicals. However, it will be in a psych unit. I have been here for the past 8 weeks and I love it.

Now, I know how hard the job market is, esp for new grads (and I don't even graduate until this May). Is this really a good unit to start as a new grad? I have heard that I might have problems later on if I want to transfer to another unit.

I echo the above statements but want to add: You will use the things you learn on the psych floor your whole life. It could be anywhere from talking your child into taking that icky medicine, to dealing with an addict family member, to helping out someone with Alzheimer's. Working Psych will help you in the clinic setting, dealing with post-partum mothers, in Med-Surg and of course in the ER. Bring up this positive quality when you're looking for your next job.

I am really happy for you that you have found a position in a specialty you are interested in! AND... you will be paid well for it. HUGE CONGRATS!!!

I did in-patient addictions right after graduation, and gone on to work N.I.C.U, school nursing, fertility clinic, women's health (breast CA), LTC with Dementia, and many more. In every job I have held since that first job, I have used my training. You will come home more emotionally exhusted than anything else.

Best of luck to you!
