Job hunting is like dating

Nurses General Nursing

I am a new grad and have been looking since May when I received my license for the state I moved to. I sent many applications, called people, did what everyone else has been doing and feeling the same way (frustrated, agitated, depressed, etc.). I end up finding a position in a very unexpected way and I am very excited about it. I think it will be a good fit. With that being said, now that I have a position, my phone is ringing for interviews. I have to laugh about this because it seems like now that I have something, I am no longer interested in other positions and that is when I am wanted. I have had the same thing happen when I am dating. If I am single, I can't find a date, when I meet someone I am beating offers off with a stick. I am not trying to gloat, but it just seems like feast or famine.

I feel like I need to start an "It gets better" type of PSA for other people who are looking, because, it does get better.

Good luck to everyone!

That's funny, I can see the commercial now. Sad video's and pictures of depressed looking new grads, then words come onto the screen "It won't be like this forever, it gets better." Then videos of nurses who just found jobs and some seasoned looking nurses, all saying "It gets better." Talk about the next Johnson & Johnson campaign for nursing commercial.

very cute observation. so true about my past job hunting experiences. but this time it feels different. i'm also a new grad and i'm hearing from my own family comments like today, "only RNs with master's degrees need apply. all the hospitals only hire nurses with advanced degrees. feeling pretty low right now. is this true? only nurses with advanced degrees are getting hired?

It's funny you say this, because I've been saying it for the last couple weeks! After about four weeks of applying to every position I could find (70+ apps in 12 facilities), I started landing interviews. I have 3 scheduled in the next two weeks, and I need to call them to cancel because I just landed an awesome job yesterday! When I was interviewing, I felt like I was dating multiple people because I had to be careful not to say that I had interviews coming up for other jobs.

I'm just glad it's all over! And yes, there are jobs for new grads out there with less than a Master's. I have an ADN and still found a great full-time job! I will say that, if there's nothing in your immediate area, you may have to relocate. This is what's happening in my case, but it's totally worth it.
