I have created all my opportunities in nursing -- never waited around -- and got a long-shot job myself. You have what it takes and you can do it. Be sure and put in your job objective that you're seeking a mental health nursing position and talk about your dealings with mental health patients in your cover letter. Working med-surg, I'm sure you've had some psych cases (senior dementia, med-induced psychoses, etc.) -- I sure did!

Hello Nurses!
I am so excited I can hardly contain myself! I have been working for a year on a med/surg floor... I LOVE my patients, co-workers, managers and supervisors. However, I do not LOVE my job. I hate that I don't have enough time with pts, let alone time to do all the "extra" little paperwork tasks that mngmnt throws out at us.
Well, back to the happy part...a full-time job just opened up in town-in the area that I have been yearning to try---Mental Health. I am getting my resume in order right now. Please keep me in your prayers...I know it is probably a long shot, as I have no on-the-job experience...
