Job Confidence

I'm just graduating from nursing school, and am worried about doing a good job. I am curious to know how long before you felt confident in your work as a nurse? I know there is always something new to learn, but I am wondering how long it took for the general feeling of being overwhelmed to suside.

It may take up to six months. It may take less, it may take more. Don't stress yourself, remember to ask for help, ask questions, and use your resources. Pretty soon you will realize that you've gotten a routine, and know the answers to most of your patients' questions, or at the very least who to call on to get the answers.

As for feeling overwhelmed, that depends on the day. I'm ten years ahead of you and there are still the occasional days where I feel like I'm drowning. Thankfully those are few and usually only last for a couple of hours (until the pts are eating lunch), as opposed to the entire shift.

"Six months to a year" is the range I've always heard tossed about in conversations on this subject. Of course, every individual has a different experience.

I'm a firm beliver in it takes a year for anyone to really get to know any job. After a year I felt confident to take on more responsibilities like shared leadership or projects. the first year you are just getting the where everything is down and the why's.

Hi,

Thanks for posting this question, and thanks to those who answered....

I just finished my first year of nursing school, and I've often wondered how long it will be (if ever?) before I feel confident. It's good to hear that people ask lots of questions and grow into their roles.

I plan on being a sponge once I'm an RN...there are so many great nurses out there, and I hope to pick up as much knowledge from them as possible!
