Jevity tube feeds

I have a question regarding a patient that I am currently working with, has MS, indwelling catheter x 10 yrs who was recently started on Jevity tube feeds to help increase her wt. Has experienced an increase in sediment in her urine to the point of needing her catheter changed q weekly. Any ideas if this might be related to the Jevity?

Any other thoughts to possible causes?

Did anyone send a urine sample? I think UTI with sedimented urine. Jevity has nothing to do with it.

I've never heard of Jevity causing sediment in the R/C. If she has had an R/C for more than 10 years, I'm sure she is chronic UTI's.

Try flushing the cath daily or BID with 60 cc normal salline. A flush kit is cheaper than a weekly cath if you take into account the increase risk of infection every time it's changed.

She has had infections in the past, however, the frequent need for changing the catheter has just been since she was placed in care to increase her weight with the tube feeds. Yes we have sent her urine for C & S and U/A each time we change the catheter, and she has been treated for an infection. What I am wondering is, if it is possible that the increased protein in the jevity or perhaps some other kind of nutritional imbalance could cause these symptoms as well, as she has had an indwelling catheter for 10 + years and says she has never had this problem before. Technique with the changes is good, and she is drinking plenty of fluids.

Try asking the dietician. They have a great wealth of knowledge and might be able to answer your question. Our dietician knows is a great resource with this type of question.
