Jeff State admissions question

Published

Hi, everyone. I am new around the boards and have a question.

I have attended JSCC in the past and am planning on reapplying for admission to the nursing program for the Spring '08 semester. I know they use a 200 pt scale for ranking candidates, but does anyone know how this scale breaks down?

Thanks! :)

Just a hint for you... I dont recommend taking Micro the first semester of nursing. It is the hardest class you will have. I took it last summer. I also dont think they will let you take it then. My friend that got accepted into the summer session told me that she was told shed have to take it in her third semester. I can tell you that you are in classes everyday from 8- noon except for Tuesday which goes till 4 and then either Thrusday or Friday you will be in clincials with shifts like 7-3 or 3-11. I would strongly recommend taking Micro this summer if you can.

Who were were A&P teacher? I had Baker for both classes and loved him :) I also had Miller for Micro and well she nice but that was the hardest class I have ever had.

I took a Saturday A &P 1 class with Dr. Fogo and really enjoyed him. I then took an evening A & P 2 class with Dr. Free and liked him even better. Both were challenging but fair.

Yikes. I just took the plunge and signed up for Micro this summer. It is with Lakisha Moore? It was the only evening class that was open.

Ouch. Wonder how much the book is going to cost.

When do they make the decisions for Fall? Did you send a breakdown of your points in with your application? I am thinking of doing this so that there are no mistakes.

One more question for you..how lenient are they if you need to take a day off of classes? My husband cannot stay home if the kids are sick..just wondering how that works.

The full time schedule is going to be difficult to work childcare around. I hate to pay for full time daycare for this.

I think its a good thing to get Micro out of the way. I will warn you that that teacher is hard but they all are in Micro. Hint for the class...she will tell you to just study her notes but you need to read and learn all you can in the chapters and her notes. Good Luck!

AS far as missing a class they are very strict about that. They have pop quizes that cant be made up if your not there. You might want to consider the part time program with St. Vincents that they offer. Those classes are night and weekends. I also know that you have to go out of town on the weekend to do clinicals at some point also you will go straight thru for 7 semesters so next summer you will need childcare in the full time program. They also dont let you have a cell phone on during class,clinicals..they deduct 5 points every offense. You can go to http://www.jeffstateonline.com and go to the nursing section and look up the classes and the rules are listed. Thats where I read about the cell phone. I have 3 kids myself and I didnt like that rule one bit!

The deadline is June 6 and usually within 3 weeks your letter will come saying yes or no but they never tell you your points. I got a paper telling me everything last spring at a nursing advising session they had.

I can't do the part time program. I would lose out on having school paid for if I only went part time. Also, they only take 30 applicants once per year. I hear competition is pretty stiff.

I figure if I get in..great. If not, than I will pursue the UAB Masters program that they are rolling out next summer and work on their pre-reqs (which require more chemistry than Jeffstate).

I am assuming the UAB Masters program is similar to the one they have at Vanderbilt where you earn your RN and your MSN during the same two year program. They accept any BS degree for entry. (which I already have)

Before I found out about my unexpected "funding" I was not planning to apply until Spring 2008. This is why I am scrambling a little with these summer courses and the transcripts. I have a business that I started last year and I was originally planning to devote my fall to building it up. It is on hold now until I figure out if I get in or not.

Ha..I have lots of balls in the air at the moment. It will be nice to have an answer so I can manage toward what I need to get done for Fall.

per my calculations your total is 171.

30=a&p 1

30= a&p 2

20= math 100 math 100 only gives you 11 points. it is not counted in the top catagory.

99=compass

11=math

total=190 new total 171.

sorry to deliver the bad news. but, i also thought that math 100 was more points and found out that only higher level math courses are ranked 30, 20 and 10 catagory. i was highly disapointed to get this information from james buxton.

Not being able to have a cell phone is a bummer. I have two midgets running around the house and a new one due in early January. I need a phone for emergencies.

I have a paper telling me that in CAT 2 : MTH 100 or higher can be used as points as can High School Algebra 2. So I still stand by the 190 in points.

You can email James and ask him to do your points for you and he will email you back to confirm the points. He is very nice :)

I know you cant use MTH 116 up top but you can use MTH 100 or higher.

There is a number that someone can call and get to you incase of an emergency. But I agree its not the same as being called on your own phone.

Points tend to be lower in the St. Vincents program. Its great you have a free ride. I still think you'll get in as long as you get your transcript in on time. I have a BA that was on full scholarship myself so I only had to take the 3 sciences. So Im done with everything just waiting to get in.

Stef you are correct. I mixed up the 100 vs. 116. Math 100 is counted in Cat. 1 and Cat. 2.

Stef please explain points being lower in St. Vincents program. I've never heard this.
