Ivy Tech Fall 2011 Waiting on THE letter

U.S.A. Indiana

I've been reading "allnurses" for several years, never thinking I'd reach this point. So, I never registered. However, after 2-years of night classes the dream of nursing might become a reality. Now, the wait for acceptance/denial begins. It's all come to this point for many of us.

Several years ago there was a forum where people were waiting on THE letter. Why not have one for the folks waiting on 2011? If there IS one I missed it.

We're all in the same boat, all waiting on the letter, and wondering if there was a minor detail overlooked. Was the score high enough? Did my transcript fall through the folder, then get swept under the desk? (That one woke me up last night) In my case, my brain can handle the wait...my stomach/intestines are not doing so well.

Thought this might be a nice thread to vent, support, and otherwise worry with each other for the next couple of months. Near as I can tell, it's going to be 74 days, give or take, before we all know....one way or the other.

Best of luck and keep prayin' I know I am! :)

Rhubarb,

I private messaged you on ivy tech message boards, but you never replied. I was going to tell you the following....I called and talked to Octavia a couple weeks ago and she told me I was the first spot on the alternate list and there were 8 spots open at that point so I could count on getting a spot. It would not be official till she called and offered it but she said "you are first on the list, with 8 open spots, do the math, you are in". I was soooo excited. I was also excepted into Lawrence. As I was contemplating which campus to go to I would go back and forth back and forth. Then it came to me....our scores were very similar so if I turned down Anderson it would open another spot for someone else. I'm not saying you got my spot, I mean you could have been number 2 or 3 but it would help you or someone else out. If I took turned down Lawrence it would be a wasted spot because I do not think they are going to call any new alternates. I am sooooo happy you received a call.

KPage...I never did see the PM. :crying2: It's usually not my style to ignore someone, unless it's a telemarketer at 2am.

Wow. I'm sitting here stunned about how things turned out. Amazing. REALLY wish I'd seen your message about the open slots. It would have helped eliminate many sleepless nights! I'm positive your decision made the difference in moving me up the list into the program! I'd heard through the grapevine that my alternate number was fairly high, which really had me concerned. No doubt at ALL that your decision to go to Lawrence made a difference in my placement. :redbeathe

It sounds like an acceptance speech, but I'm thrilled to be going to Anderson campus. I like the folks there and am comfortable with their routine. However, I would have been happy with Lawrence too....for different reasons. Their use of simulators this coming year sounds truly amazing! KPage it sounds like you're going to really have fun down there.....

KPage, again many thanks for being so thoughtful in your decision for chosing a school. When Octavia called I nearly drove off the road. Never take good/bad news while driving on the interstate! It sounds like a great win for all of us. I was talking with my friend who just finished his first year. Wow. What we will know this time next year....amazing.

Just a word of advice to you newbies coming on board. Get a SNE position as soon as you can after first semester and hold on to it. That can make all the difference in the world in getting a job quickly after graduating. My class is graduating next month and I think everyone with SNE experience already has a job lined up and most of those that dont have that experience cant even get and interview yet.

What's SNE?

I looked it up. If any of you are like me and didn't know, an SNE is a "student nurse extern."

Exactly what Carlosnindy said. What they don't tell you in school (or, at least they didn't tell us at Lawrence campus) is that the best time to get a SNE job is after first semester or at the very least, during second semester. Don't wait any longer than that because the window of opportunity closes and then the hospitals don't want you for SNE anymore because you get too close to graduation actually for them to spend the time training you as a SNE. The job market now is markedly different now than it was just a couple of years ago. One of my neighbors graduated from Ivy Tech Indy in Dec '08 and was one of the few in her class who did NOT have a SNE position during school, yet she had no trouble at all getting a job as soon as she graduated. Now, the majority of our class were not able to find SNE positions because those are very limited and you have to have a connection to get one of those, and only those with paid SNE experience are able to even get interviews for jobs before graduation. The rest of us have no choice but to wait until after we get licensed to even be able to apply at most hospitals. So, try your darndest to get a SNE job during school and don't wait too long to do it.

Good luck to all of you!

How exactly do you go about getting a SNE?

orientation is august 26 for us ! im excited scared but ready !!! im already reviewing and reading up on simple things lik lab values, iv calc etc. good luck to all the future nurses !:cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers::cheers::clpty:

The hospitals that have SNE programs have specific times during the year that they accept applications. You just have to look on the websites to find out when. If you know someone on a unit that can talk to the manager to get your app pulled, that's a great help. . .

hi im going to ivy tech gary this fall and im planning on getting into the rn program when im done with my pre reqs...is the gary rn program good?

what class do i need to do my best in pre rn program?

and who are the best teachers for those classes?

I was just wondering, why are some people applying to more then 1 Ivy Tech campus? Wouldnt that be a heck of a drive for some people if they lived in Jeffersonville and got into the Indy campus?

Also, if I took the TEAS test and didnt do very well in the math portion because honestly, I suck at math, and that is the absolute truth, but anyway, if I didnt do very well and didnt get into the RN program, does that automatically put me in to the LPN program, or is that something I would have to apply for too?

Hi TGrider853...

It would make sense, but my understanding is that's now how it works. :)

Basically, you're kinda stuck with the person who takes you to the prom...even if someone else comes along. I believe you can apply to both and then chose, but you're not automatically moved into the LPN stack if RN doesn't work out. At least, that's my understanding. And I'm not an expert by ANY stretch...

Hate to say this....but, your advisor/dean would have a better understanding of the specifics. No matter what happens, though, don't give up and try again!

Math hit me hard, too. Of all the math classes we had to take...135 and everything, we didn't cover MIXED FRACTIONS! There were a bunch of them on my test...and I was just guessing. I could do stupid Quadratic formulas and mortgage loans...but, not mixed fractions. Made it into the program though...but, WAY too close for comfort. :o
