Ivory tower: myth or fiction

i keep reading comments about the ivory tower and have a couple of questions. my understanding about np faculty is that they not only teach but also practice. i do know np faculty at my program practiced a day a week, has something changed?

the other current theme is how much money the ivory tower will be taking in with the dnp programs, often cited as the entire rationale for the dnp emphasis. logically, if the ivory tower is taking in huge sums of money why are np faculty salaries so low? wouldn't all nps want to be faculty, sound like the best job for the np. yet i constantly hear from my np peers that they are unwilling to take a pay cut to work at the university.

I have not started my NP courses yet (will start 08/26). What I was planning to do is after maybe 2-3 years of being an NP to teach one or two nursing classes a year as an adjunct faculty just to get back in teaching. I taught elementary education for 6 years prior to being a nurse.

Do you feel this is doable? Anyone?

Absolutely that is doable! At one point in my career, I was working as a full time faculty at one college, doing about 16 hours/week of NP work, and doing one 6 hour adjunct clinical for another college as well. And I still managed to get home by 5 pm most nights with my weekends off.

Lots of nursing schools are doing Saturday clinicals and evening clinicals even, so I would think it would be workable with an NP's schedule. Sometimes that pay as adjunct is better. I made about 45.00 per hour as an adjunct with a Master's degree. Doctorates went for 55.00/ hour adjunct pay.
