Do you have to have a dedicated line for IV protonix at your hosipital?
We do... The line, either peripheral or a central line port must be dedicated to protonix.. Nothing else can be given through that line.
Here is my understanding. If the infusion is continuous (say for active GI bleed), then Protonix goes through a dedicated IV access. If you are administering a Q day prophylactic dose, then the running IV is stopped, the line flushed with saline before Protonix is pushed, and the line flushed with NS again before the running IV is restarted. This is because Protonix is not compatible with most IV fluids and could cause precipitation, unless the fluid is NS.

We give it IVP. I also have never heard of a dedicated line for it.
