I have previously worked in a LTC facility and only Dr's started IVs and only phlebotomy techs draw bloods. I wanted to know is this customary in most ltc facilities?

We have had to draw our own blood for a few yrs. now and we are just begining to do IV's. The MD's would NEVER do either of these tasks.

We do all PIV's and foleys, and have lab services do blood draws on M-W-F, but they will come every day except the w/e. They can not draw from a PICC, (neither can LPN's), so we have to have a RN do that before they arrive. MD's are only required to make a visit q 60 days, but can get a 30 day extension if they wish. We actually have to send some of our people out to the MD q 60 days because the MD "doesn't visit" NH's. We used to do PEG tube changes as well, but I'm not sure if that changed after one of our nurses killed a pt doing one. (Long story, it was ugly).
