How much of the diluted solutions will you need to draw up for the following ordered doses?

Ms Flash is ordered 2mg of metoprolol. You dilute Metoprolol 5mg/5ml to a total of 20ml.

John Johns has a frusemide infusion running continuously. You make up the infusion to 500mg in a 50ml syringe.

How many mg/ml will your solution provide?

Awesome, thank you

Okay well...you are a bit of a mess but that's okay. You'll get this, I promise. Let's start here.

-you have 5mg of medication diluted in 20mls of fluid.

-how many mg of med in each ml? Hint: this is simple division.

Once you figure this out let us know and we'll go to part two.

And just so you don't get discouraged this step is the foundation for the rest of the problems.

5mg diluted in 20ml is 0.25mg/ml . but if the doctor has orded 2mg wouldnt i do Strength required x Stock Strength Volume

Stock Strength

2mg x 20ml / 5mg/ml?

Yes. You could solve the problem this way.

Wuzzie was trying to get you to reason out how to solve the problem rather than memorizing and applying formulas.

Note that your answer is not exactly correct. The correct answer is

20mg x 20ml / 5mg

NOT

20mg x 20ml / 5mg/ml as you have. I suspect this was a careless error, but units matter.

Sometimes the answer to the question is not always the answer.

Diluting IVP medications is not evidence based for most medications.

Please review this information before diluting. Calculations may not be necessary.

Refer to the package insert to determine whether you should be diluting in the first place.
