Hello everyone, I’ve been considering going to a trade/private school to become an LVN, but I’m so confused. On one forum I hear and read about the job being so great with high pay and a high demand for LVN’S , but yet on another forum all I read are these horrific stories about people not being able to find jobs for TWO YEARS! I really need your help; I need unfiltered info about LVN jobs in California i really don't want to leave this state..
I need to know if it’s worth the time and money or should I just consider another career? I don’t want to be jobless with a 30k bill...
I am a male fluent in Spanish and live in the Los Angeles area… Your responds will help make a life changing discussion on my career. thank you for your time and answering my question :)

Hi, and welcome to this website! I have moved your post over to the California Nurses forum so that it will hopefully get more responses.
I attended an LVN program at a private trade school in Van Nuys from October 2004 until October 2005, and while I do not regret my decision to become an LVN, I had to leave California immediately after graduation for more job opportunities, competitive pay, and a lower cost of living. Keep in mind that this was 2005, and the economy was still booming.
Fast forward to 2011. The Los Angeles area is heavily saturated with too many new grad LVNs and not enough jobs, although it might help that you are a bilingual male. The pay rates in the area have also deflated to all-time lows because employers can get away with it. The biggest challenge will be getting that golden one to two years of nursing experience. If at all possible, I would look for a cheaper LVN program at a ROP (regional occupational program) because this will lead to an LVN license for less than $5,000. Good luck to you!
Thanks for your reply The Commuter, its was very helpful.. I going forward with still wanting to become an LVN, but one last question you stated "I had to leave California immediately after graduation for more job opportunities" Where did you go for these opportunities? what state? thank you again for your response...
Texas.

I agree with TheCommuter 100%. It will help a lot that you're a bilingual male. The facilities I work at are always looking for bilingual staff. But definitely look into going into an ROP program first before shelling out $30k for a private. I don't think paying that much for LVN is worth it given how hard it is to get that first job as a new grad.

Not if you want to work in a Hospital. You will be hard pressed to find anything out side of a nursing home or doctors office in California

Hello Freddy 13,
I've read your comments and decided to write to you because I, too, am considering LVN. I am currently searching for LVN private school with affordable tuition, program with no prereq requirement, federal loan, and near Los Angeles. Which school are you going to? Can you recommend me some? Is it really tough to get a job as LVN still these days?
THank you

if you are willing to spend $30k on an education, why not consider going the rn route through a university or a junior college? even at the jc level, to get through an lvn program would be much more affordable than through a private school, if you are set on being an lvn.
some of the places in the la area that offer lvn through rop are listed as follows:
los angeles unified school district - la county
1237 north mission road
los angeles, ca 90033
(213) 241-3158
los angeles unified school district - locke community adult school
325 e 111th st
los angeles, ca 90061
baldwin park adult school
4640 n. maine avenue
baldwin park, ca 91706
(626) 939 4456
these came from this thread:

my best advice is do some research and don't rush in, you'll end up with a lot of debt. yes you'll be a nurse, but then a good portion of your income will go toward paying off loans every month and what's the use in that?
