Is West Coast University a good school?

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

So I was wondering is WCU a good school? I'm really interested in becoming a registered nurse. I have many friends who are struggling to get into a nursing program and I don't want to have to go through that. I know the school is extremely pricey but the fact that I don't have to struggle to get classes or into the program is nice. Can anyone give me any insight on this?

It's expensive. If you want to go here, at least take the non-nursing pre reqs at a community college and then transfer.

Don't take this the wrong way, but...if you want to know if a school is any good or not, start by looking at what you're getting for what they charge. These for-profit schools are operating on false, antiquated beliefs that there is still a nursing shortage and they sell a bill of goods to prospective students who believe that going to their school is the only way to quickly become an RN. With health care reform, low job availability for new grads and the decrease in pay/benefits for RNs, people who take out the loans for such an education will never recoup the monies to ever pay them off. You'll be in debt forever. When you look at U.S. News school rankings, they NEVER list the predatory, for-profit schools with the fancy billboards and commercials on their lists as among the "real" schools. I was taken for a ride years ago at for-profit school for a medical assistant course. What a waste of money. If you really want to become an RN, don't be in such a hurry that you make non-sensical financial decisions. Despite what those schools tell you, it is possible to get in at a traditional school that is actually respected in the community and by employers. If I'm a hiring manager and I have a resume come across my desk for two applicants: 1 from a regular school and one from a for-profit, I'd pick the former hands down, as I believe the education and background of the any other institution to be far superior. Short answer: No, West Coast University is NOT a "good" school. Sorry. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

thank you :) I think I'll just go the longer route if I have to wait I'll just do it. It's better than owing so much money for a very long time!

My former coworker graduated from West Coast University with a BSN degree in 2009. Even with prior experience as an LVN, she was having difficulty finding employment as an RN in southern California.

So she took her $90,000 student loan debt and relocated to Texas, where she found a job relatively quickly. However, she must repay that student loan debt on a lower rate of pay than she would be earning in southern CA.

The nursing employment market in most parts of CA has been horrid for some time. 43 percent of new grad RNs are unemployed in CA. You'd be in a world of hurt to owe $130k in student loans without a job to repay your debt.

Besides their price tag, their nclex pass rate is also horrible. I would never spend that much money for a school with such a terrible pass rates. I would not even consider a CC or a Cal State with such bad pass rates.

West Coast University - Inland Empire - ADN 2011/2012: 61.53% 2012/2013: 75%

West Coast University - Inland Empire - BSN 2011/2012: 71.95% 2012/2013:73.9%

West Coast University - Los Angeles - ADN 2011/2012: 76% 2012/2013: 50%

West Coast University - Los Angeles - BSN 2011/2012: 86.15% 2012/2013: 78.45%

I know some hiring managers that are opposed to hire people from a for profit school because they know or assume that those people weren't competitive enough to get into a CC or State college because of grades or whatever. Also something to consider.

50%....seriously? There's a 50/50 shot I'll actually become a nurse? No thanks.

Hey I'm a student at WCU.. I was impressed because of their sim center and the student resources it is expensive but I transferred in some classes so the price went down. The only thing that bothers me is that you take 2 classes per term and they pick your schedule.

No. It is not a good school. I used to attend it. I unfortunately failed two classes and I was thrown out. I appealed but they still said no. Now I'm not saying that it is a bad school because I failed out because, of course, that is due to me too. I'm saying it's bad because they treat their students unfairly. They are extremely disorganized from the advisors, the general staff, the clinical staff, etc. With some saying that as long as you complete your prerequisites at a community college, it will be cheaper. That is a lie. I did a parent plus loan. My loan was 14K and my parent's was 100K and this was when I had 4 more terms left. It is significantly cheaper, but still a *** ton of money to pay especially since I didn't finish. We are in that much debt with nothing to show for it. Don't go to this school. It is a waste and it will stress you out more than you possibly know with practically to breaks in between terms and stacks of homework that will eventually suffocate you
