Specifically, is the school of nursing BSN program a good program? What about the living near the school in galveston?
tell me your thoughts, experiences, opinions, etc.

Although I did not attend this school, I have lived in the Houston area all my life and know that UTMB has a great reputation for nursing. (I actually work for this hospital at a satellite clinic in the Clear Lake area, but not as a nurse). In my opinion, I would never even dream of living in Galveston. Although there are some nicer areas, there appears to be a lot of low-income areas and crime. Since it's on the water you also have to worry more about flooding and hurricanes. Galveston also becomes extremely busy and conjested around special events like Mardi Gras, the annual biker ralley, etc. which makes it hard to get off and on the island. Personally, I would look at living in other areas that are pretty close like League City, Clear Lake, etc. If you do not mind more of a drive, I also really like the Pearland and Friendswood areas.

um..*trying not be affended*
I have been living in galveston for almost 10 years...I go to nursing school here on the island and I happen to LOVE it. Sure I cried when I first got here (most people do) :) but this place grows on you and before you know it you would rather die than leave.
Pros: Everything is close, it has a small town feeling, Super easy to get around, great traditions --Fat tuesday was this week, and although the island does get busy I would STILL say the traffic on a the VERY busiest tourist weekend nowhere NEAR rivals that of a typical houston/clearlake traffic day. Many more pros but I am getting a tad bit tired of defending my beloved G-town HA!
Cons: Sure there are some low income housing...but isn't that the case everywhere? I will still rather walk through the projects in galveston that the ones in south houston. Besides you figure out in a hurry where to stay. I frequently venture into the projects---the best places to eat are there and everyone on the island knows it. :)
Give Galveston a chance---you might like it.

I lived in Galveston until 2003...it sucks! But, I do know that UTMB happens to be an excellent hospital. My grandmother worked for UTMB, and my aunt currently works for them. The pay is excellent and the staff is ueber friendly. I visit Galveston on a regular basis, and am glad when it comes time to go back home! There are some upscale/safe neighborhoods. Unfortunately they are outnumbered by ghettos. Dickinson is a lovely area, if you can handle the commute. Whatever you do, do not move to Texas City aka Toxic Shi@$y!!

I'm currently a senior at UTMB in the BSN program and I just wanted to say that UTMB is a great school BUT it is a bit disorganized. They tell us to be very flexible because things are always changing. You really need to look after yourself and be on top of everything so that you dont miss out on anything.
Living in Galveston was not what I expected. I thought it would be full of hustle and bustle. My previous experiences of Galveston have been when I have traveled here to chill on the beach. The city is very dead on the weekdays, almost like a ghost town. Weekends it does pick up though. Like previous posters have said, the area here is low income. It reminded me of 3rd ward Houston. There are a lot of homeless and crazy people wandering the Seawall. In the hospital though there are a lot of friendly and helpful employees.

UTMB has dorms and fraternity houses available for all students. The dorms run about $385 a month and the fraternity houses are about $400 a month. Both options provide all bills paid, free cable, and wireless internet. The dorms are fully furnished as well. Hope this helps.
there are also numerous apartment complexes around UTMB that are walking distance to campus. However the price for those are a little bit higher ~500 to 600/mo and sometimes u also need to pay for utilities.
I lived in carelton courtyard and had no complaints there. A lot of students also live there as well...I would definitely recommend a roomate though to help bring the costs down. Hope that helps!
