Nursing role during a disaster
So no one wants to discuss the role of a nurse during an unplanned natural/bio-terrorism disaster (not just a pandemic)? Bummer. I thought it would it would be interesting to talk about what the nursing role was.

Nursing role during a disaster
So I have to give a presentation in which I must discuss disaster phases : Prevention, Response and Recovery (especially related to nurses) I am trying to brainstorm for a direction in which to take my presentation. So whats your opinion? What is the role of a nurse during a disaster? I think during the prevention stage education is the key. Because nurses are the most trusted profession we can educate the public on how to be prepared. Nurses are usually first responders during the Response phase....not so sure how the nurse plays a role in the recovery phase. Thanks guys....I could use some more suggestions. :bowingpur

UTMB Applicants
UTMB is notorious for losing applications and then not really excepting responsiblity for any mistakes on there end. Always check and then double check whatever is being told to you. Its a good school, don't get me wrong but I know first hand through several people in the program how unorganized they can be. I also think its completly unfair that they keep extending the deadline. To me the pool of applicants is what it is. How is it fair to the people that got their applications in Jan. to be continually strung along for someone that MAY have a tad bit better GPA than they do that comes along last minute and applies at the end of may. To me that seems wrong-- but that is just my opinion. I was accepted to UTMB last year but I choose to go a different route because of my personal experiences and I work at UTMB. so that should tell you something. I couldn't be happier in my ADN program. Good luck to everyone! but if they treat you like this and your not even accepted just imagine how its going to be when your half way through the program and they start pulling stuff.... just a thought but trust me it will happen.

Is UTMB a good school?
um..*trying not be affended* I have been living in galveston for almost 10 years...I go to nursing school here on the island and I happen to LOVE it. Sure I cried when I first got here (most people do) :) but this place grows on you and before you know it you would rather die than leave. Pros: Everything is close, it has a small town feeling, Super easy to get around, great traditions --Fat tuesday was this week, and although the island does get busy I would STILL say the traffic on a the VERY busiest tourist weekend nowhere NEAR rivals that of a typical houston/clearlake traffic day. Many more pros but I am getting a tad bit tired of defending my beloved G-town HA! Cons: Sure there are some low income housing...but isn't that the case everywhere? I will still rather walk through the projects in galveston that the ones in south houston. Besides you figure out in a hurry where to stay. I frequently venture into the projects---the best places to eat are there and everyone on the island knows it. :) Give Galveston a chance---you might like it.

UTMB fall 2006 BSN students . . .
I didn't think pharmacology was that bad. Although I have/had a great instructor. I really liked how she taught the class. She focused more on understanding the concepts rather than memorizing a million different drugs. We only had to know a few representative drugs from each group. For example, She wanted us to know what the typical beta blocker did...and so on. Not like pharm at UTMB :) --- One of my good friends just got done taking the final, she said that class nearly killed her. They had to know 80 drugs for each exam (4 exam) and then the final is comprehensive. YIKES! He said that he knows of at least 8 people that failed that class. I guess I just don't see the point of memorizing a million drugs...I think its better to understand what the typical drug from that group does, and then know the ones that are a bit different. Just my opinion.... but unfortuanately no one asked my opinion :wink2: Good luck.
