  1. so just thought it would be fun to hear what everyone was "dinged on" for your PBDS. silly test :)
  2. So I just accepted a job in the surgical ICU. YEAH!!!! I am so excited but scared to death. Any advice for a newbie? Any hints, organizational ideas or prayers would be greatly appreciated. HA!
  3. bump...try it 1 more time.
  4. So no one wants to discuss the role of a nurse during an unplanned natural/bio-terrorism disaster (not just a pandemic)? Bummer. I thought it would it would be interesting to talk about what the nursing role was.
  5. So I have to give a presentation in which I must discuss disaster phases : Prevention, Response and Recovery (especially related to nurses) I am trying to brainstorm for a direction in which to take my presentation. So whats your opinion? What is the role of a nurse during a disaster? I think during the prevention stage education is the key. Because nurses are the most trusted profession we can educate the public on how to be prepared. Nurses are usually first responders during the Response phase....not so sure how the nurse plays a role in the recovery phase. Thanks guys....I could use some more suggestions. :bowingpur
  6. So I have to give a presentation on which I must discuss the Phases of a disaster: Prevention, Response, Recovery (especially related to nurses) Any ideas? I am trying to brain storm on a direction to take the presentation. What is the main role of nurse during a disaster in your opinion?
  7. Glad to hear it! See happy endings to our UTMB sagas.... :) Good luck at UT houston!
  8. UTMB is notorious for losing applications and then not really excepting responsiblity for any mistakes on there end. Always check and then double check whatever is being told to you. Its a good school, don't get me wrong but I know first hand through several people in the program how unorganized they can be. I also think its completly unfair that they keep extending the deadline. To me the pool of applicants is what it is. How is it fair to the people that got their applications in Jan. to be continually strung along for someone that MAY have a tad bit better GPA than they do that comes along last minute and applies at the end of may. To me that seems wrong-- but that is just my opinion. I was accepted to UTMB last year but I choose to go a different route because of my personal experiences and I work at UTMB. so that should tell you something. I couldn't be happier in my ADN program. Good luck to everyone! but if they treat you like this and your not even accepted just imagine how its going to be when your half way through the program and they start pulling stuff.... just a thought but trust me it will happen.
  9. June?! Man that TOTALLY sucks for you guys...my advice? I would go someplace else. TRUST ME. I am very knowledgeable in the ways of UTMB....
  10. um..*trying not be affended* I have been living in galveston for almost 10 years...I go to nursing school here on the island and I happen to LOVE it. Sure I cried when I first got here (most people do) :) but this place grows on you and before you know it you would rather die than leave. Pros: Everything is close, it has a small town feeling, Super easy to get around, great traditions --Fat tuesday was this week, and although the island does get busy I would STILL say the traffic on a the VERY busiest tourist weekend nowhere NEAR rivals that of a typical houston/clearlake traffic day. Many more pros but I am getting a tad bit tired of defending my beloved G-town HA! Cons: Sure there are some low income housing...but isn't that the case everywhere? I will still rather walk through the projects in galveston that the ones in south houston. Besides you figure out in a hurry where to stay. I frequently venture into the projects---the best places to eat are there and everyone on the island knows it. :) Give Galveston a chance---you might like it.
  11. I start my ADN program aug 25th...I just want to start already!!!! I got my books and been paging through them a bit. Its almost as bad waiting to start as it is waiting to be accepted.
  12. hmmm...I wonder if the Docs have to be figerprinted as well. Sure seems like the people I know in Medical school don't. Strange
  13. um, great. Thanks? But um- it's actually "Juneteenth" I just think if your going to give history lessons you should spell it correctly. Have a lovely day. :)
  14. you'll do fine!!! Its too hot to do anything besides study during the summer anyways! HA!!! Good luck!
  15. I didn't think pharmacology was that bad. Although I have/had a great instructor. I really liked how she taught the class. She focused more on understanding the concepts rather than memorizing a million different drugs. We only had to know a few representative drugs from each group. For example, She wanted us to know what the typical beta blocker did...and so on. Not like pharm at UTMB :) --- One of my good friends just got done taking the final, she said that class nearly killed her. They had to know 80 drugs for each exam (4 exam) and then the final is comprehensive. YIKES! He said that he knows of at least 8 people that failed that class. I guess I just don't see the point of memorizing a million drugs...I think its better to understand what the typical drug from that group does, and then know the ones that are a bit different. Just my opinion.... but unfortuanately no one asked my opinion :wink2: Good luck.
  16. I have decided not to go to UTMB...I have invested too much time in this other program to stop now. I am surprised that there aren't more people that got in/accepted to UTMB. hmmmm..... where is everyone? :)
  17. really? I always just figured you would have to have your BSN to go onto get your MSN. If I can get my MSN without my BSN then that seals the deal....ADN all the way! :) I know UTMB has an ADN to MSN program...but if I remember right you actually get your BSN along the way. I will have to look into that.
  18. I am leaning towords the ADN program, mostly because I already have a BS in biology so I wouldn't have to any classes except the core nursing classes. I have already taken Pharm, Health Asses, and Intro to nursing Process (at GC they allow you to take a few nursing classes without being inrolled in the program) so over the next 2 years I would only have to take at the most 7 credits a semester. Its a hard choice, plus I would still do all of most of my clinicals at UTMB anyway. Who knows. This is hard.
  19. Well I got accepted.... But now I have to make a big descision. 3 years or 2? Retake Pharmacology and Health assessment or not...ADN or BSN. hmmmmm....what a pickle.
  20. hmmm.... I am still waiting. I haven't gotten anything yet
  21. I still haven't heard...but when I called awhile back they told me that their deadline was May 1st. So we still have a few weeks left.
  22. ah, I see. Yeah that makes it much more difficult and complicated. Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.!!!!!
  23. That sounds a little crazy to me... I mean why accept people and then try to weed them out? Isn't that why they make is so hard to get IN to nursing school? hmmmmm... Aren't there any other ADN programs around that you can apply for?
  24. PS I got turned down for UT-Houston today, so hopefully UTMB will accept me. I would have to commute, but it would be worth it. sorry to hear that, but you have other options so I wouldn't get too down about it. And remember... Its their loss!!!!:icon_hug:
  25. As someone who has lived in galveston for the last 9 years.... You have to know where the neighborhoods are. I live in a super great neighborhood over by UTMB. It mainly consisits of UTMB students/residents/older families that have lived there forever. I would say that there are about 8 to 9 great little neighborhood communities here on the island. Some are in better school districts then others. Don't get me wrong, house shopping in Galveston can be EXTREMELY scary. HA! But you have to think that these houses are NOT brand new...which means that they may need a little TLC ( they have withstood several hurricanes so you know they are built well) But fear not, galveston has its charms. You just may have to drive through the ghetto to get there thats all. PM if you want more specifics. tah tah...
