Is UPMC moving ALL of the L&D to Magee?

Published

OK...so this might be a stupid question. I've been searching the other UPMC hospital sites and can't see anywhere OTHER than Magee that one can have a birth within the UMPC system (downtown).

Really? It doesn't seem right. Can anyone speak to this?

UPMC Mercy has an L&D unit.

Specializes in Emergency & Trauma/Adult ICU.

Yes, Mercy and Magee-Women's are the only UPMC hospitals in Pittsburgh with L & D. UPMC Horizon and UPMC Bedford have L & D, but they are a considerable distance away. From the way the UPMC website directs you if you search "services" for OB/GYN ... you would never know that Mercy has L & D, including high-risk and NICU services.

Additional L & D in Pittsburgh: West Penn, Forbes, and Heritage Valley - Sewickley.

St Clair Hospital in the South Hills has L and D unit

Specializes in Emergency & Trauma/Adult ICU.

You're right michelle126 - I forgot St. Clair.

Wow! Thanks for info. That is amazing to me...and sad that Pittsburgh women basically have one choice. I suppose it is as much as many cities, but for Pittsburgh's size, I would expect more.

Seriously, doesn't UPMC's size (monopoly as some would say) give them an unfair amount of power when it comes to how they treat employees, benefits, pay rates, et cet? If you're essentially the only gig in town...well, it seems like you could do what you want.

Yep...it is mostly West Penn/AGH vs UPMC in one way or another. There are a few independant hospitals tho..St Clair, Jefferson Regional and ???? The last one doesn't have an OB dept tho.

I've delivered at West Penn, Magee and Shadyside 2 are Upmc and one wasn't.

Specializes in Trauma SICU.

Jefferson Regional is part of the West Penn health system.

I know that there aren't many choices in Pittsburgh, but at least there are choices. I live in Westmoreland County and really the only two full service hospitals anymore are Forbes and Excela Westmoreland. Want to go some place different to have surgery or labor we have to go to Pittsburgh.

Not sure I understand this response as we have named 2 UPMC hospitals in the city with L & D and 4 non-UPMC hospitals with L & D.

Jefferson is still independant....unless I missed something???

Yeah, I'm dumb. I got it confused with another West Penn hospital.
