A home health agency, excitedly called my school to announce that they would be happy to hire new grads. Since I have other healthcare experience, though not nursing, and felt comfortable working alone (as I was formerly an EMT), I figured if nothing else I would have an opportunity to utilize my interview skills.
I am a new grad, my license was issued but I was still waiting for my hard copy of my LPN license. (The agency claimed the BoN said that you cannot work as a nurse until you have a hard copy of your license. Which quite simply is not true, as confirmed with the BoN). I was asked to go to meet a client. I was never told the rate of pay nor how long the "visit" would be (I was driving when she called and just got the name, address, time & to be there.)
I got to the home, I was informed I would be working as a HHA (I've never been an HHA, HHA skills were not covered in my nursing program. And per the BoN nurses cannot work as CHHA/HHA unless they have a CHHA certificate from the BoN after completing the 3 week course.) The person who met me at the house was a nurse FOR A DIFFERENT AGENCY. I felt like an idiot, and didn't want to ask too many questions but the patient was someone who shared her life story spontaneously so I was able to get her background. I was expected to be there for 3 hrs to "orient to the overnight routine". This was on a Wednesday. The other agency nurse casually mentioned that I was expected to start working the upcoming Saturday night from 10P-8A. (Mind you I NEVER gave any indication that I was interested in overnight work. I said it wasn't impossible with enough notice to make arrangements. (I am a single mom of a 9 yo and we have 2 dogs. Sure my mom is nearby but I can't just say, hey mom can you take the kid and dogs overnight on Saturday...) I was shocked and said that I wasn't sure if I could work as a HHA, nor was I ever informed about the potential to work 2 days later in an overnight shift. The patient nearly blew a gasket and called "my" agency up. They claimed that they didn't tell me about the shift in 2 days because they wanted to make sure I "clicked" with the patient. I could hear her tell the patient that it could be weeks before i have my paper license and I could work as an aide until then.
I didn't receive any real training or orientation. I have since gotten my paper license, and informed the agency. She asked if I wanted to per diem overnight job (every other Saturday 10P-8A), and I told her that I am not a CHHA, per BoN regulations I cannot work as a CHHA, and the patient clearly stated that the assistance needed isn't skilled nursing but a home health aide for personal care, possibly even a personal care assistant.
I was called at 7:30 this morning for a call out for a 3 hour case. I've had no training with this home health agency. I have not even seen the paperwork or logs that this agency uses. I was clear that many of my nursing skills were mostly classroom with clinical practice under supervision.
they don't tell the pay rate up front unless specifically asked. They didn't offer any formal orientation or training. (I was surprised when I arrived and it wasn't even a nurse from the agency that allegedly hired me (last I heard they were waiting for the background check to return) and she had no idea about any paperwork or time sheets for the agency that I was supposed to work for.)
Am I nuts, or is this kind of "off"?
