Is it true that you don't have to write your NCLEX to work in NYC?

to work in any state in the US you must test and pass NCLEX.

NCLEX is a national test for nurses.

Some states actually accept the Canadian exam.................and do not require the NCLEX..............however because of the Visa Screen requirement now for NAFTA Visa nurses, this is going to change. Visa Screen requires either NCLEX or CGFNS...............that is also why the Canadian nurses have been yelling.....some of have been in the US for years working on an American license with reciprocity from their Canadian license, and now they are having to write a nursing exam, even if they have been practicing for years in the US.

Hi, I am from Canada, and I would like to to a 13 week travel assignment in New York, but I was told that you don't have to write your NCLEX if you are only going to be out there for under a year? Is this true? And does anybody have any information about hospitals in New York? Thanks!!

You are required to complete the Visa Screen process, as well as the credentials verification for NYS via CGFNS. This also takes months...........

Have you done either of these......................can't get a NAFTA visa without the Visa Screen certificate.....and that requires either NCLEX or CGFNS. If you haven't already done this, you are talking months and months............

The rule for Visa Screen actually goes into effect in July, but NY requires their own screen and that takes months..............you will never have it done before and be used a NAFTA Visa before the deadline................

Hey Jen, thanks for your reply, but not all states require the NCLEX, that's why I was just asking about New York. You don't have to write it to work in Maine or North or South Carolina. I have friends who work there now, and by law, they accept the canadian exam. A girl I work with said that you don't have to in new york if you are only there under a year, because she has gone, but I wasn't sure whether to just take her word for it, because it almost seems too good to be true. Your problem now is Visa Screen Certificate not the license from NY. You have to go through a separate screening process for NY, plus the Visa Screen reuqires NCLEX or CGFNS now. You are just doing things too late. If you did this last year, all you would need is the NY screen and you would be set, but now.............................you can check out http://www.CGFNS.org and see what is required for the Visa Screen for Canadian citizens. Look at the lower right hand site of the list of all of their forms. Also, the verification for NY state. You will find both of them there, please check it out before you sign anything...................................or you will be stuck......
