Is it true Houston has highest pay?

I have done some research here and there since I have been planning to move away from the place I work at. I applied for some hospitals in Austin, Dallas, FT. worth, etc. I have been hearing that Houston is the highest paying city for RNs of all Texan cities.

I won't lie, I mean I like what we do (although I will get masters or CRNA since I can never do just nursing job forever), I want good pay. I think we deserve much better pay; the educational requirement and devotion for nursing school has increased tremendously, so why do we have to settle for crappy pay, crappy treatment, and regarded still as someone who cleans crap up? I refuse that kind of Victorian age thinking.

Anyways, any RNs at Houston also any others who know a bit about this, shoot me up some of your thoughts. Thank yoU!

My aunt works in the Oncology Department of a Houston Hospital. She has Masters in Oncology and has been with the hospital for a very long time. She gets paid $48/hour. She is also an ADN professor at a community college.

Salaries are contingent on the marketplace - in any location. Jobs that require qualifications that are in high demand but short supply, will command higher salaries. If you are chasing $, take a look at the Rio Grande Valley.... they are always recruiting.

Houston has some very large hospitals that provide extremely specialized services and there is a perennial demand for expert ICU nurses as well as those who have specialty certification(s). Many organizations also have realized that ANPs add a huge value to the quality of nursing care, so they have added clin spec-type jobs in many direct care areas. These jobs are definitely in the higher salary ranges, but require a clinical MSN. However, I doubt whether there is a very significant difference between Hou & DFW when it comes to generalist jobs.
