Is taking Human Anatomy at the same time as Chemistry a bad idea?

Published

Awhile back ago I asked if taking Chemistry and Biology at the same time was okay, and the general consensus was that it should be okay. I was going back through the school I'm interested in's page on requirements and it seems as though they changed their biology course to biology - human anatomy (it's possible I missed it the first time when reviewing, but I remember thinking it was weird that Human Anatomy wasn't a requirement seeing as it is for so many other programs, and I had gone through that page several times).

I didn't think taking Chemistry at the same time as Biology would be a big deal since Biology was always pretty easy for me, but Chemistry is a whole different story. Chemistry was extremely difficult for me when I was in high school, and I had even taken a prep class for it (though to be honest the prep felt like an elementary science class with how easy the work was).

One thing I have to say is that I've learned to study and think in a much smarter way than when I was in high school, so I have that going for me. My study skills growing up were abysmal, I never did homework, so it's hard for me to gage what kind of person I am now when it comes to schoolwork, overall.

I don't think I have to take any other classes. There's only about 5-6 pre-reqs and then the TEAS exam, though I believe the other pre-reqs can be covered by previous credits I earned at other schools. English -- I might have to potentially retake since I made a B in it, and I'm not entirely sure how competitive this nursing program is. I just know it is competitive.

The other thing is is that I'm trying to earn my CNA certification so that I can work, and right now I don't really know how to gage how much of that will cut into my school time. Right now I'm trying to re-teach myself math, and I'm simultaneously studying for the TEAS exam, so I'm trying to juggle all of this around. I would potentially like to work as a CNA while in school, too.

I've heard countless times how hard A & P is, and I know Chemistry can be difficult for a lot of people and it definitely was for me. :(:(:( I want to apply to nursing school as soon as I can because I feel like I've already wasted a lot of time going in and out of college, and I'm ready to start my career and move into the next stage of my life. If I take one course at a time, then I won't be able to apply to nursing school until 2019. If I take both at the same time and do poorly in both classes because I couldn't handle them simultaneously, then it'll be the same situation all over again. The plus side, is that my school allows me to work on the second semester of nursing school while waiting to get into the program, so I could be doing that work while waiting to apply, while taking Chemistry and A & P at different times.

Sorry for the long post! I'm just stressed, and I feel like I have so much to learn in such little time, and that there are a lot of factors that I need to weigh. :sorry:

I took two sciences together (A&P II and Micro) and it was fine. I think two sciences, given the right teachers and study habits, is totally doable.

What type of Chemistry is it? Intro? General?

It's Foundations of Organic and Biochemistry... I've also heard of people finding Organic Chemistry to be very difficult, as well. *sigh* :bookworm:

Since you plan to work I'd say take em separately. Are you trying for A's in both or just pass? My A&P teacher says we need to study 1 hour a day just to pass and then more to excel.

I think trying to make As would be ideal since the nursing program is competitive. I'm not sure how competitive, and I can't seem to find any information on that when I search for it. There are only 6 pre-req classes (the school I'm at now has like 12-15..) so each class is going to carry a lot of weight, and that's not a lot of classes that people have to study, overall (assuming they don't take the classes all at once).

I thought OChem and BioChem were MUCH easier than general chem.

I took AP I and General Chem together and AP II and Micro together. I would NOT recommend taking Chem and AP together if you can at all help it. They are two different heavy science courses that need loads of separate study time. AP II and Micro were a cake walk together as they definitely complemented each other and often times overlapped in content covered. I spent significant less time studying when taking AP II and Micro together due to similar concepts.

Thanks for everyone's comments; I really appreciate them. :)

Right now I'm leaning more towards taking the classes at separate times. I need to try and make an 'A' in all of my classes, I believe... I can start taking courses for the second semester of nursing school, too, and knock some of it out. The only problem, is that I'm worried about how I'll do in A&P and Chemistry (even when taking them at different times). So if I can't get into this school's nursing program, even after all of that, then I have to spend more money at other colleges who have like 10 or more pre-reqs that my ideal school does not have. So all of the time spent studying for the 2nd-semester nursing classes would be all for naught. :cyclops:

I took all my science classes together. TIME MANAGEMENT is very important if you want an A in those classes. If you don't have the time then don't do it. A&P requires alot of studying. Chem is a little easier if you can grasp the concept. A&P is alot of memorizing and understand the concept also. My professors exams are rediculous for A&P. She mocks NClex style exams. It's very doable if you're discipline.

i think you will be find, i took anatomy/physio B with micro and two other basic prereqs. you can do it just stay on top of the work, read ahead in the syllabus its doable, and youtube can be your best friend with chemistry

I believe if you are motivated enough (which you sound like you are) you could take both classes together and manage...however if you wanted to make those A's a bit easier, I would take them separately. I'm taking chemistry and microbiology at the same time and it's no fun.

I have friends right now who are taking A&P1 with Chem and they are pretty much struggling. I find A&P pretty easy myself, because it really is just memorizing everything. But, the thing is, it is VERY time consuming. I spend a couple of hours every day of the week to study for my exams. If you can manage your time efficiently and are very much motivated like others have said, you can do it! Personally I would take them separately, since chemistry is a bit tough, just to secure my As. Good luck!
