Is it the same???

Published

I am taking the HESI entrance exam on 4/18 to try and get into the ADN at our local CC. I am also almost done with my MBA in healthcare mgt.

Since they are now going towards hiring the BSN or MSN nurse, do you think the MBA in Healthcare Management counts or will suffice, or do you think I have to get the MSN to get good job offers in nursing??

Any comments, ideas, or suggestions on where I could direct my energies and job searching after I have gotten my RN ad an MBA in healthcare mgt??

Thank you for any insights.

MSN and MBA are not the same thing.

Yes, I know they are not the same degree. I asked a much more involved question about how employers would see the 2 degrees. Whether or not one could assume the same roles in leadership, as well as what sort of positions might be open with the MBA in HC Mgt.

What is your undergraduate in? I would think you would be more marketable if you did a fast-track BSN. The most marketable jobs and those that progress the farthest are a MSN/MBA.

We have 3 MSN/MBA in our hospital system that I know of. One runs the entire system of about 14 hospitals, one is the CEO of 3 and another is the risk manager for all the hospitals. T We have a MBA who is the OR manager, but quite frankly, she does not get a great deal of respect because she is not an RN and they had to hire a BSN to oversee part of the staff per state licensing rules and then the BSN reports to the MBA which not many people agree with.

The only option I have for a nursing degree right now, is the ADN due to distance (70 miles one way for the BSN), and $. I will be paying for the tuition out of pocket.

That's interesting that an MBA is a manager of a clinical dept....I didn't think they really did that these days....

What kind of job are you looking for? The MBA has nothing to do with nursing so if you think it will help you get a nursing job, it won't. If you want some type of management job it might help, but not sure it would help you manage a nursing unit without the nursing experience. Most unit management jobs want nursing experience.

MSN nurses USUALLY don't work at the bedside. Yes, some do, but most people who go on to get the MSN work in advanced nursing roles or education. In many areas in the country, hospitals are only hiring BSN nurses. An ADN and MBA does not equal a BSN.
