:confused:Please someone give me facts about whether or not we still have a nursing shortage. Im quesioning myself as to whether or not to pursue this profession. With all the talk on this forum about people not being able to find jobs and all. Do you think this is a temporary thing???

We agree on a lot, Kabin. I waver between being positive and looking long-range and planning my immigration to Canada. At least the Canadians have smart fiscal policies, are paying down their debt, and have a very *clear* bright future.

Working on getting my points up to 67 for immigration. Look at how smart the Canadians are about who they'll let into their country:

Hah! After the 2004 election I actually went to Canada's immigration website! Better have your BSN...

Things are awful - worst since the Great Depression. But from a long-term economic perspective, I truly believe the US will pull through (this from someone who wanted to move to Canada). We have the largest, most diversified economy in the world, a flexible labor force, and a history of corporate innovation. Unfortunately, many US citizens developed a horrible sense of consumer entitlement and a childish aversion to paying taxes (i.e.: Joe the Plumber). This current economic crisis is the shot of medicine the US really needed to get back on track. Getting back on track will not be quick nor easy. But it will happen. And given the widespread deritus this crisis is leaving in its wake, I think we may see some truly progressive legislation coming out of this mess that will benefit generations to come (i.e.: health insurance for all, etc.).

Keep the faith (and use your extra funds to buy stocks or up your 401k contributions - prices have never been cheaper).

We regret to inform you that at this time, you do not meet the current pass mark of 67 points for migrating to Canada as a Skilled Worker, and you would therefore not have a very good chance of being successful in your application based on your skills, qualifications and work experience

Well, I was darned close. I guess it would help if I spoke French, took some classes in Canada and had family of some sort there as well.

Hmmph!

How interesting this test was! If the US tried to pull out a test like this we'd have civil rights violations and lawyers up the ying-yang!

They're calling this shot of medicine the hair of the dog that bit us since it's more spending and accumulation of debt. US consumers were living beyond they're means via credit cards and home equity lines of credit and we know what happened there. The US government has been doing the same thing for years of course. I fear the best case scenario is the easing credit plan briefly works similar to a binge shopper's credit card statement coming in the mail. It's not sustainable, I'm betting our standard of living will decline and, of course, taxes will skyrocket.

The local evening news showed lines of an estimated 10k unemployed at the University of Phoenix Stadium job fair yesterday.

Standard of living has been declining anyway. Higher taxes aren't necessarily a negative - they should have been higher all along. Unfortunately, some of us who played by the rules have to suffer from the stupid actions of the majority. At the end of the day it boils down to one thing - are you willing to give up your US citizenship and move someplace else? I'm not ready to throw in the towel yet...

Final count is more like 15,000. Makes me very happy to be an employed nurse...

Definitely, but things can still change on a dime.

I have family in Canada, so it's not such a leap. I doubt I'd do it though because my closest loved ones are here in AZ.

Naw, I wouldn't throw in the towel but I am living with a different mindset.

Of course things can change on a dime - but imagine what it is like not being in healthcare???? This is about a "safe" as it gets...

Actually it is a minority. Most of us play by the rules.

Back on topic. Check the hospital websites some new grad positions have been posted this week. There are still plenty of jobs for the experienced and the new grads who are aggressive.
