Is it too soon to make change?

Published

I am about to start my 3rd month on med-surg floor and I hate it or at least I think I do. When I took this position there was not opening in L&D (which is really where I wanted to be), but now there is and I cannot decide what to do. I am going to feel really bad if I leave so soon, but I am afraid that if I do not leave now, I will feel worse later.

My preceptor encouraged me to work med-surg, but admits that she shielded me from a lot of the negatives about working on this floor. No nurse manager, low moral, etc. So should I stay or should I go? I do not want to burn bridges, but I did not work so hard to be nurse to not enjoy my job to some extent.

If the L&D position is in the same hospital, that just doesn't work.

You must be a new RN.

What is L&D?

Life's too short to stay in a job you dislike. It's just a job after all. Go for L&D!

All of you that are telling her to go for it probably have not been in hospitals too long. When you begin your job, Human Resources or some other entity will tell you about how you would go about transferring to another department and when you would be able to do it. The earliest that I have ever seen is six months and you must have a really good reason to change earlier, not because you are unhappy on the unit. Most facilities are one year.

So if L&D is the choice, it is going to need to be in another facility more than likely, if it is going to be done right away.
