Is it smart to start my pre-reqs now?

Published

Hi Everyone,

I'm an Air Force Wife / Veteran / Stay at home mom with a Bachelor's Degree in Physics. I'm home for now to raise my twins. They start preschool in 2 years and that is when I want to pursue nursing school full time (most likely an Accelerated BSN program in Las Vegas if we get orders there like I am pretty sure we will).

Anyway, I know I'll need to take certain pre-requisites to get accepted when the time comes. The problem is I'm not sure which school I can apply to yet until I am certain of our next location. I'd like to start getting things moving as soon as I can, so is it smart to take my prerequisites at my current location in Oklahoma for the next year while we wait for orders? I'm worried if I begin taking Chem, Bio, etc on a part time basis that they won't get accepted at the schools I end up applying to. I have taken some of these before but it was over 10 years ago so depending on where I go it's possible they won't transfer.

I guess what I'm really wanting to know here is what is the best way to spend my time while I wait to move over the next year or possibly 2? It seems like a waste to do nothing until we get to our next base late next year.

I answered in your other thread.

Would you be willing to work in the mean time? You could take a CNA course and work as a CNA. It gives you some experience in the healthcare field. Plus, who knows, it could lead to potential job offers as a nurse in the future.

Hopefully some of the nursing school education Guru's will answer on your topic. Making sure things transfer without any issue from school to school so you don't waste time and money would be my biggest concern. There are differences in school accreditation's that make a huge impact on changing schools, continuing education, and obtaining or transferring nursing licences! Do your homework...

That would be great, as weird as it sounds, I can't really afford to work. Putting the twins in daycare would cost more than CNA pay. I really want to start something g though. The best I can think of is night classes after my husband gets home so I can take a pre req or two at a time.

Sounds like you have a well-thought-out plan. As long as the courses are completed at a school with regional accreditation, they will transfer without problems. Many schools have an 'expiration date' on science courses... ~ 5 years. So if yours are older than that, they would need to be retaken anyway. It wouldn't hurt to investigate the nursing programs you're interested in to get their specifics.

Best of Luck to you on your nursing education pathway.

And a huge THANK YOU FOR YOUR MILITARY SERVICE to you and your hubs!
