I just enrolled in Sanford Brown's PN program. Afterwards, I plan on going through the ADN program either there or somewhere else. I've heard good things about it, but now that I'm actually going, others who are enrolled in community colleges or are already nurses, are bad mouthing Sanford Brown and me for going there. As long as I get a good education, shouldn't that be all that matters? Is Sanford Brown really not a good college? I know it's expensive but I'm not really worried about that; I just want to be able to get a good job. Some nurses who graduated from there, might not be doing all that well, but that's probably because they don't apply themselves. I'm 31 years old with 3 kids, paying for college myself, so I would think I would want to do good and succeed. Anyone have any input on Sanford Brown?
Flame me if you want :flmngmd: ... but I wouldn't get my nursing degree from any school that chooses to advertise during Maury or The Wendy Williams Show ... or advertise on TV at all for that matter.
Well...my private university has a TV commercial and we have the highest NCLEX rate in the state for BSN programs. So do not throw everyone into the same category. Some real universities do have tv commercials.
Anyway, I can't really offer too much information. I never liked "for profit" or "career college" because I feel at the end of the day, as long as they are paid they don't care what you do or don't learn. They claim to want to help out non-traditional students but if that weren't the case you wouldn't charge so much freaking tuition, you'd have classes that would transfer if people want to continue their education outside of their school.
However, I feel the only opinion that matters is those of the hospitals. Here in NY, the school is not such a big deal. As long as it is accredited but they are paying more attention to GPA and the kind of degree, as far as just schools though, NYU students don't get hired any quicker or more frequent than the Hunter College students. As the hospitals if they find it acceptable, if they would prefer you go to a different school, ect.
Hey, Went to Sanford Brown in Georgia. I finish around 2004 to me the school was just ok...but I will let you know that Universities and Most Colleges will not except your credits. They will ask for a transcript like they did me but the credit will not transfer. Please check with the school you plan on pursing for your ADN to see if your credits will transfer. Call the school and speak to Admission.

I stand corrected, you're right. I should not make such a blanket statement about all schools, and being originally from NYC I should have remembered that some reputable schools do advertise on TV there ... my apologies! Here in FL we never see commercials for the "real" universities (at least where I live right now), only ones for these Everest-type schools that flood the airwaves as often as the commercials for Burger King. It's just sickening.

It's cool! I still laugh when I see my school's commercial because it's SO awfully cheesy, like those videos they show students at orientation. Oh I really hate those though that are all the same "Hi I'm *insert name* and with one phone call I changed my entire life and the lives of my children/family. It only takes one phone call and soon you're out there doing it hands on and they helped me with job placement!" And they never specify what the person in the commercial is doing, they just happen to be in a pair of scrubs.

When you pursue a law degree, where you go to law school DOES matter, I don't care what people say. Of course, I should have heeded that advice when I was applying and accepting offers of admission. Some people say just go to the best law school you can and do your best, well that's just crap. Once you enter the workforce and start looking for jobs, you soon realize that the graduates of Harvard, Yale, Columbia, etc. get the interviews way before you do if you went to a school ranked anything below top 25 (some job announcements have blatantly even stated only top 25 schools need apply), even if their grades were less stellar than yours. Just take a quick look at the schools that most associates attended at the big law firms and you will see what I mean. That's my advice to anyone contemplating law: Get in to a top 10 law school or don't go at all. That's the game you have to play with a field as pretentious as law.
I am afraid to even imagine this happening to nursing schools, it is a dangerous trend for the profession
