Is it right or wrong to take this nursing spot?

One of my good acquaintances said that she might get into nursing school this fall on short notice. They spoke with her and said she would probably get in for fall. I was really interested and emailed the nursing school. They told me that there might be a spot for me this fall and to come in and speak with her. Then my good acquaintance told me that she was under the impression that there was only one spot. The nursing school never told me this, but now it makes me worried.

If we are competing for one spot, and for some reason I get it and I take it, am I in the wrong since I found out about the nursing school in the first place from my friend? I don't even know if there is only one spot but I'm afraid to ask or even know. I"ve worked so hard to get to this point and it's such a great opportunity, I'm not sure what to think.

It's all hypothetical at this point, but if she's right, than ugh, not picture perfect situation.

I lost a vacation time slot once the same way.

Is there a moral to these stories, like people should keep their mouth shut about their plans?

yes, competition is healthy, and it ticks many off in the process. But it is what it is.

OP, be upfront and tell your friend, you will have to deal with this competition the rest of your career, start now doing it right.

Since you didn't even know about the program, or have the inclination to find out about it until your friend told you about it, it makes me wonder how much you thought about it before or how badly you really want to go.

I think the moral of the stories is....watch what you do cause it could come back to bite you. By no means am I saying give up your dream, your career etc.....just go in with eyes wide open that it may cost you a friend....especially if like SC RNDude said, you didn't know about it till she told you. My friend didn't know about it till I told her and I got squeezed out of the job. It was very painful. Even worse she quite the job not longer after taking the position.

Watch what is motivating you......is it to beat her out or is it to move forward with your career.

If you are offered the spot then you should take it if you truly want to go to this school. I really doubt that you and your friend are the only two people that the school is considering for this one spot (if there really is only one spot). And if you turn it down there is no guarantee that they will offer it to your friend.
